Random thoughts: I liked how it's now winter on Lothal. SW has sort of this reputation of showing planets that have monolithic climates or environments (ice planet, desert planet, city planet etc.etc.) so it's nice that they took the trouble to show the changing of the seasons (no pun intended.) Also adds something to the tone of the scene that the usual sunny grasslands just wouldn't convey.
Also of interest is the way they staged Ahsoka's vision. Anakin was behind her the whole time and you can either interpret that to mean she's unwilling to face the truth and/or a reflection of how she turned her back on him and the order. Of possible significance; Yoda also appeared behind her, but this time she turned to face him and he was still there.
Some oddities: it was probably just stated for the sake of the audience, but logically speaking, you'd think that Ahsoka would already know Ezra is from Lothal (she heard his broadcast after all and was Hera's handler.)
Likewise, you'd think it would have already come up how Ahsoka had left the order. If not from her then from Kanan. Jedi leaving willingly seems like something of a rarity (only 20 masters in 1000 years, though probably more Knights & Padawans) that you'd have thought word would have travelled fast. Not sure if Kanan/Caleb was still in the Temple during the incident with Barris & Anakin or already out with Master Billaba, but I'd be surprised if he didn't hear of it.
It's implied that she crossed paths again with Anakin & Rex on Mandalore. Filloni describes it as "a very important mission". How she came to be there, what the mission was and who set her to the task is still unknown. Though if I had to guess for that last one, I'd say it was probably Bail Organa.
I was wondering at Yoda's motivation in basically telling Kanan and Ezra not to even fight. I think there's more to it than the fear of falling to the dark side.
Is it because it has to be Luke/Leia to stop the Emperor through their father, so he knows K&E are doomed to failure no matter what and just need to hide? What about doing good and saving lives, even if it's only on a small scale? Maybe that will be why we don't hear from them in the OT Era; they're following Yoda's instructions to stay the hell away from Luke/Leia because it would endanger them. Maybe their mission is to keep the Inquisitors busy and away from Luke/Leia?
I see it as a warning about falling into the same trap the Jedi fell into during the Clone Wars. Jedi are supposed to be passive, not aggressive. "...a Jedi uses the force, for knowledge and defence. NEVER for attack."
"...I can only protect you. I can't fight a war for you."
"...the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice"
"Great warrior? Heh...wars do not make one great!"
You can tell from Yoda's reactions that he knows Ezra doesn't understand that his questions are fundamentally flawed. One of the hardest things to teach a person is to let go of there fundamental
assumptions. "...you must unlearn, what you have learned." He's trying to do for Ezra what he'll eventually try to do with Luke. I don't believe there's any larger strategy involved in what he is trying to teach here.
It's no coincidence that Kanan was knighted after he surrendered his attachment and sense of responsibility to protect Ezra. Luke has a similar moment in RotJ, followed by the Emperor acknowledging his knighthood and of course, during Ezra's vision the last time he was in the Lothal Temple.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that, I geeked out when Ahsoka said the last she saw Anakin he was rushing off to save the Chancellor. So there was an unfilmed Clone Wars episode where Ahsoka and Anakin were together immediately prior to the opening of ROTS?!?!?! Must see!!!
I agree Yoda's new model looked a bit odd (but then so did Kenobi's & Vaders at first.) That said the shot of Ahsoka looking back over her shoulder at him felt light something straight out of a Ralph McQuarrie painting and is probably now my favourite image of Yoda from either show.
.
I wonder if Anakin saw Ahsoka after she left the order. We know she saw him, but that could be from a distance.
On the other hand we don't know where Rex was during those events yet. The Siege of Mandelore is an event we have not see, though both Ahsoka and Rex were present. And that was likely after she left the order.
Another thought passed my mind. Does Ahsoka know who Darth Maul is? Was she in any of his episodes of the Clone Wars? She'd have seen the aftermath on Mandelore.
If Rex met her on Mandalore, there's a good chance Anakin did too. As for Maul; I don't recall what if any role she had in those episodes but it's likely that she already knew about him. I'm sure the young initiates were all taught about the last known Sith Lord and if not, she was on Mandalore where his little cult was based.
Indeed - that would explain why a clip of Ahsoka's basic outline was shown at one of the Star Wars events - production was in place when Disney ordered it cancelled.
Whatever happens, Ahsoka will be in the next season because her voice actress has signed up for Season 3.
Maybe they could slip in the back way with the cliche of a story telling (long boring trip on the Phantom so Ahsoka and Rex regal the story of the siege of Mandalore.
I suspect there's a very good reason why they're holding off telling Ahsoka's RotS story, while Maul's and Ventress's have been found new homes in other media. At the very least they were holding off because they intended to bring her back and didn't want to tip their hand too soon. Now that her story appears to be on a collision course with Vader, it seems like the right time to do something with it. Either as a flashback story or as a tie-in comic.
While I'd love to see another lost CW episode essentially transplanted into Rebels, I can't see them doing more than a cliff-notes version. I'd much rather see the story fully realised and short of Disney OK'ing the production of one last CW arc/TV movie (the whole thing was 4 episodes IIRC) a comic book adaptation seems like the most logical way to go.
I would like to see a Lightsaber flail, maybe a Blow Gun with Lightsaber darts. What I would really love to see is a Lightsaber plunger, to unstop a toilet.
