Every time that was quoted it was pointed out he said that after season 4 was filmed.

That's why I said implied and partially.

"...We’re trending now, and beginning with season 4 and through season 5, to a much more singular sci-fi, action-adventure, emotional storytelling. And you know, the outliers are getting less and less, as we kind of focus on saying goodbye to each other and the fans.”

I was always of the opinion that season four was going to go even harder with the swings, because it was already made when season three got dunked on by some. I wish I'd been wrong.

But hopefully five is a good ending to the mixed bag.

Continuity Snarl: In Trelane's previous outing in SNW it was shown that he only appeared to the crew in disguise (for example, as a Vulcan bartender) presumably to preserve the canon of Spock not recognising him in The Squire of Gothos. In this episode Pike recalls his "real" appearance, mentioning his fancy coat.

I assume that Pike telling everyone about what happened, AND describing Trelane's real appearance to everyone, including in Starfleet reports, makes the non-recognition of Trelane by the crew in TOS even more hard to fit.

Uhura's daughter plot presumably insulated her from the Sybok business who she's not to know about before ST5. I assume Scotty being absent at least maintains his ignorance on Sybok in that film as well.

The writers forget that this isn’t TNG. You can’t call the computer just by saying “computer” and 23rd century ships didn’t have counsellors.

Was this counselor ever mentioned when Ortegas was going through PTSD? I can't remember anything other than some sort of military punishment regarding Ortegas when the counselor would've been more appropriate.

Also, the crew has called up the computer by voice for the auto destruct in Let that Be your last battlefield, and I thought Daystrom's computer installed into the Enterprise was also reachable by voice--that's how Kirk talked it into deactivating.

The longer this drek goes the more I'm convinced this is all some game the TOS crew is playing on the Rec Deck. Some type of Pike module or DLC. Initially, M'Benga, Chapel, Uhura and Spock are playing. Kirk joins some times. Then Scotty starts coming. It becomes their version of the TNG poker game.

Musicals (complete with score counters), body swapping, race morphing, xeno-gorns, Trelane, puppets, magic neutrinos, people getting cut in half, black and white, nothing but homages, soap operas, war doctor super soldiers.... its making each of the players slightly more exaggerated versions of themselves and introducing zany scenarios for the players. Its the only way any of this makes sense.

Spock, being the only player who actually served during that era or with Pike, must be absolutely fascinated by all of these altered scenarios.

*edit* set the game post season "4" (TAS (or even STC) proving the rec room) and it has access to all of their experiences to play upon, like trelane and the gorn and Kor and korby and khan (for the generated la'an character and time travel) and pike's ultimate fate and balance of terror's romulan scenario, all of it.

i would absolutely love to be actually enjoying a Trek show. I was super excited for it when it was announced, and enjoyed enough of DSC to have gotten through all 5 seasons, and laughed uncontrollably at huge stretches of lower decks.

This show is not taking itself seriously at all, yet is not supposed to be a comedy. The Orville was a more serious show.

The end of season 2 permanently changed the way I perceive this show. The musical episode shattered any possible suspension of disbelief and it has been downhill ever since.

according to Seán in the TrekCulture video above, (he got to interview Rhys Darby) the scene where Pike cuts him off from saying Trelane was originally different.

In the script and on set he got to say his name before Pike says he doesn't care, but as we see in the final episode, they cut him off before he says his name.

Pike cutting him off before he said his name was done in the edit.

Fuck this episode, the writers of this episode, and Alex Kurtzman for good measure. SNW Season 4 is officially the second worst season of Star Trek ever produced (still somehow beating Starfleet Academy). I'd rather rewatch post Season 2 Discovery at this point, at least that sometimes resembled Star Trek in between all the crying and magic babies.

They have taken a good premise for a show and a great cast and just shit all over both. The worst thing is that they've proven that they can make real star Trek episodes, they've done it twice this season and done them well, they literally just don't want to make Star Trek, so they don't.

1/10, I guess its technically "better" then the puppet episode but thats like saying getting punched in the face is less painful then taking a steel boot to the groin.

The parts with Pike that were played straight were good. I barely remember the daughter from that pretty season 3 finale, but I did really like them dealing with Pike's memories of her and salvaging that episode slightly

I probably found it funnier than the other two comedy episodes this season as I laughed a fair number of times: at the reveal of "Sybok", at Uhura telling Pike he's her father, every time someone said "space madness." Trelane was mildly amusing in the scene with Pike but I thought all the scenes with him and the Q lady were weak.

The M'Benga/Ortega scene I would have rather was in a normal episode without the distracting soap opera filter.

If anything - if you're going to do a soap episode - the performances were a bit too subdued. Imagine Avery Brooks in this episode. He would have eaten the set.

I haven't liked what they've been doing with La'an all season at all. She was one of my favourites in the early seasons but I have to say Christina Chong's acting has even felt a bit "off" this season. Maybe it's just the material.
