Glad to see some exploring, but

1. It’s “lens”, dammit.

2. In the second half, the logic makes no sense. (Among other things, if “cause precedes effect” where they are, that just means time moves in reverse — and since they’re in that, so would they. So the entire location and everybody in it would all be going in time-reverse — meaning that from their perspective, everything would be happening “normally”, except that when they finally escaped they’d discover they’d moved backwards in time. There’s certainly no reason to expect they’ll be able to magically walk across the bridge before extending it.)

3. So, was Redjac a Vezda?

4. EDIT: Oh, and funny how Gamble goes monster and gets sent to
the brig
, but Batel goes monster and gets sent to
Pike’s plushy quarters
.
Hey:
It's good to be the Captain's woman... ;)

Gamble had already killed one crew member -- and attacked others -- before he was sent to the brig. Batel went berserk and attacked . . . the crazed crew member attacking people.

Wait...So the one on the ground was dead? I thought he was just unconscious and the first actual kill the Malevolent Entity killed was the Redshirt outside the Brig?

Most folks would interpret that reaction to be Earth Human Immortality being doubtful.

Lanthanites seemingly are not originally from Earth.
Are we sure about that? Or are they a sister species (or human mutation) most of us just aren’t aware of until sometime in the future?

I enjoyed this one a lot. Yes, it reminded me of Event Horizon (although I haven't watched Event Horizon again since the first time I saw it because it traumatized me and my son big time:)).

I am one who didn't mind the opening conversation between the couples. It cemented the genuine love between Chapel and Korby for me - a real thing, not escape or rebound. And I was relieved that the whole "you wanted/you want" between Spock and Laan was about their desire to continue the dance - only horizontally. No drama, just sexy fun times.

There were proper hints of Roger bucking against any sense of imposed authority over his research that will inform his future demise. I loved how Christine stopped him from slicing open his hand - yeah, let's just take a minute here, buddy, I'll bet there's another way. He would never gotten out of that alive without Christine's good sense (and the cleverness of her crewmates).

We all suspected Gamble would be a goner before the end of the season. At least we got to meet him and like him before the inevitable.

When we first saw the planet, my immediate reaction was "I've seen this planet on The Expanse." Which isn't meant to be a criticism, familiar locations filling in as multiple planets both within the same franchise and amongst others is a proud sci-fi television tradition which has gone on in the other Treks and other shows as well. Reminded me of that omnipresent Vancouver pine forest that fills in for every planet in the Stargate franchise.

And the ubiquitous stone quarries in vintage DOCTOR WHO.

Heck, watch enough classic Hammer Horror flicks and you'll start seeing the same sets, furnishings, and locations popping up over and over.

"Ah, there's that same lonely wooded crossroads again. And that staircase. And that decorative fountain . . . ."

That was great! I gave it a 9! Would give it an 8.5 but feeling generous because they actually got to a strange new world and uncovered the remains of a new civilization!

Loved the creepy atmosphere! Mostly good stuff in this episode.

The only down side was that the Enterprise crew didn't come of so well for the first part. Very unprofessional and kind of juvenile at the beginning with the goofy teen romance stuff. Add to that the flawed decision-making when they discover the corpses. It's a no brainer to just step outside the structure to report the ship. At that point, they didn't know that they had to go with Chapel so it might not have ended well but it would've been the correct call. That stuff brought the rating down a bit.

But overall, this was a very good one! Wondering where they're going next with it? Presumably, the Gorn and the new species are ancient enemies.

Watching it now...I see that Gamble went to the Prometheus School of Encountering Mysterious Alien Objects.

I am just at that point and am so-far liking the episode, feels a bit closer to what I want to see.

Isn't this kind of... sad? I can't think of any TOS episode that would cause this kind of hesitation, maybe one TNG (Conspiracy) nothing in the other series stand out, except maybe the DS9 episodes with heavier war themes?

I'm liking SNW, but that it gives this kind of hesitation is just, well, sad.
A 10 year old would be just fine watching this episode.

The problem I have with episodes like this is there's no tension for most of the characters. We know that all the main characters are obviously alive for TOS so there's no risk to them.

But the main cast were never going to die in regular Star Trek episodes either, unless a contract came up. It's not IF they'll make it, that is always a given. It's HOW they'll make it.

Wasn't part of the tension of Best of Both Worlds was that Patrick's contract was up for renegotiation?
