There"s one on your list I'd strongly consider as better. The other? Good.

But not THAT good.

TOS is not only peak Trek but may be peak 1960s television period.

Impossible! It's not got Daleks in it.

While I would love longer seasons you have to make the assumption that if they increased the number of episodes that the budget would remain static.

Do we really want season 3 of SNW to be season 3 of TOS?

Meh, you don't have to make that assumption at all. If you increase the number of eps, you increase the budget.

I mean, TOS Season 3 could have produced thirty episodes instead of just twenty-four but somehow I doubt NBC and Paramount were going to suddenly dig up an extra $175,000 per week for said six extra episodes.

Gonna say no on that scenario.

Clearly this is the best episode of the series so far. They do actually know how to make interesting shows then! So then why all the filler? Singing episodes, deep back story about some characters which is boring and nobody cares about it. The Spock stuff is overdone - him suddenly showing emotion has been done about 300x now across star trek by now for example. It's not surprising anymore. But just way too much Spock in general - he's the main focus of the show, even more than the captain.

Also in fact the whole original series prequel idea is WAY overdone at this point but that's a different matter.

Overall the characters on this show aren't good. Anyone else not even know the names of maybe half the of the main characters? The first officer (don't know her name) definitely needs to go. She's uninteresting, doesn't do anything and the acting isn't good.

Also enough with the same feel of all the planet settings. They all look the same: dark, foreboding. Makes no sense and adds to the boring quality.

I don't believe that at all. She had an entire episode dedicated to her this season, her name is spoken as much as Pike and Spock.

So then why all the filler?
None of the episodes are filler. They all advance story in some way, whether it's the over all background arc or some character's personal growth. Yes even the musical does this.

deep back story about some characters which is boring and nobody cares about it
You'd see that lots of people care about them if you read the episode threads.

If it's deep backstory then it, by definition, is not filler. Also, I welcome exploration of any characters. That is the point of Star Trek-the human adventure.

It's almost like this show is...what's the term *snaps fingers* oh, yeah, an ensemble piece. That captain isn't the main character.

Nope. Know them all.
