If the internet proves anything, it's that lots of what people think they "know" about STAR TREK just ain't so.

Deceptive memories, confusing "fanon" with "canon," remembering scenes that didn't happen -- or that only happened in a book or fanfic, conflating two different episodes or scenes or conversations, etc.

I've seen much multiple times. The live shows I haven't watched a second time yet is DS9 and VOY. SNW I've watched s few eps twice already as I really like the feel of the show and like to analyze the sets, props and costumes. It's just so colorful and bright like TOS and TNG but even more so.

To be clear, that wasn't directed at you in particular. Just at plenty of Star Trek debates all over the internet.

"But Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet!"
"But the Farragut was destroyed!"
"Vulcans can only have sex every seven years!"
"Kirk didn't know about David!"
"Khan's wife was killed shortly after they arrived on the planet!"
"Saavik is half-Romulan! That's canon!"

Etc, etc.

I thought both of Una's were also lovely. The first with Kirk and the second with La'an. Spock's "I'm the X" and Chapel's tune were also quite good.

Yeah Spock really seemed to regret that he let his emotion go wild for nothing. Maybe that's why years later he no longer gives as much attention to Chapel. What she did was pretty harsh.

Oh yeah I know it wasn't. Just putting my two cents in the conversation.

And even two of the Enterprise sculptures on the wall of the TNG Seasons 1-4 observation lounge don't match their onscreen appearances. Canon is canon, but canon is flexible and sometimes easily overwritten.

I'm fine with bending it as necessary, or even tossing it out if it better serves the characters and story. I mean, hell, the misogyny in classic Trek, as progressive as Gene and the writers tried to be, can go for good and I wouldn't miss it for an instant. I say that because there's no way in hell Pike would say he couldn't get used to a woman on the bridge. We've advanced 60 years beyond that, and so it can go. Let SNW overwrite it completely.

And in the cases of the wall sculptures you can just say that's how the 1701-B ended up looking and how the 1701-C started out. :)
I find it funny how as I get older, the requirements that things be exactly like they're supposed™ to be have dropped off sharply. I think part of it is maturing, but another part is expanding awareness that the real meat of the story isn't so much the bits and bobs of canon, but the impressions it's supposed to leave on me.

Don't get me wrong, canon is good, it's nice to have internal consistency, but Trek has gone through six decades of civil rights, liberation, and change, and acknowledging that while allowing that design languages change in reality, and to remember at the end of the day it's just a show. A good one, a world I'd love to live in, but still a show.

That wall is a perfect example of Trek canon's flexibility. It has only one aircraft carrier (the CVN-65 seen in TVH), no space shuttle, no ringship and no NX-01, yet it is clearly established eight years before the production of TNG that the shuttle and ringship existed and later on the NX-01 is firmly said to have always been in the history books of the TNG characters. But creative choices by the different production teams over the years have led to different visual depictions for the audience, and in many cases we're lucky in that we can just say a wall display can be chalked up to the people who designed the sculptures or even Captain Picard's picks for which Enterprises from history best fit his new observation lounge.

As to people misremebering/not knowing details....

The Trek Franchise now:
1) Spans 58 years (1966-2023)
2) Includes 11 TV Series plus Short Treks.
3) Totaling 45 seasons of Trek TV
4) With 889 episodes (890 w/The Cage)
5) 13 Movies

LD S4 will get us to 900!
And add to that - people who've never seen it (and have no interest in doing so) still know what it is, still know there's that one guy with the ears, who doesn't have emotions and that Kirk Talked. Like. This. It lives in the collective unconscious now, like fairy tales.

Actually...

TOS, 80
TAS, 22
TNG, 178
DS9, 176
VOY, 172
ENT, 98
DISCO, 55
LDS, 30
PIC, 30
PRO, 20
SNW, 20
Movies, 13

That is a total of 881 episodes across 43 seasons and 13 movies that have aired so far. (I am counting the upcoming season finale of SNW, since it's only 4 days away.)

If you count SHORT TREKS as a series (I personally don't, but I can certainly see why many would), then the total is 891 episodes across 45 seasons and 13 movies.

If you do count SHORT TREKS as a series, then LOWER DECKS will get us to 901 episodes.

If you do not count SHORT TREKS as a series, DISCO will be the one to get us to 901 episodes. (I'm loathed to admit this, because I'd much rather LOWER DECKS have the honor of crossing us into the 900 episode threshold.)

And if the second season of PRODIGY does see the light of day, that's another 20 episodes!

I posted a year or so ago that I predicted, based on evidence at the time, that we would hit 1,000 episodes by 2026... 2027 on the outside, if I remember correctly. Given the strike and what's been going on at Paramount (and streaming services overall), I'm starting to think it will be 2030, at the earliest.

One regret: Hemmer wasn't still around to sing a song that had references to cold temperatures in it.
Hemmer landed with a gleam,
On a planet of icy dream.
While others seek the warmth and gold,
He’s happiest when it’s bitter cold.

Hemmer, Hemmer, from the stars so bold,
Loves the secrets that the snowflakes hold.

Floating over frosted lands,
With icy fingers, frosty hands.
Gazing at the polar light,
Feeling at home in the silent night.

Hemmer, Hemmer, from the stars so bold,
Loves the tales that the ice has told.

So when winter's chill takes hold,
Think of Hemmer and his love for cold.

You won the thread.

Nice! I was going to post the lyrics from Snowblind by Black Sabbath. I thought they were perfect as published (especially about blindness). But you beat me by a few minutes and --- you win.

For you youngsters that don't have the song memorized like I do...

What you get, and what you see
Things that don't come easily
Feeling happy in my pain
Icicles within my brain (cocaine)

Something blowin' in my head
Winds of ice that soon will spread
Down to freeze my very soul
Makes me happy, makes me cold

My eyes are blind, but I can see
The snowflakes glisten on the trees
The Sun no longer sets me free
I feel the snowflakes freezing me

Let the winter sun shine on
Let me feel the frost of dawn
Fill my dreams with flakes of snow
Soon I'll feel the chilling glow

Don't you think I know what I'm doing
Don't tell me that it's doing me wrong
You're the one that's really the loser
This is where I feel I belong

Kiss the world with winter flowers
Turn my days to frozen hours
Lying snow blind in the sun
Will my ice age ever come?

Well, co-winners! Snowblind is perfect!

La’an’s solo is my favorite, with all the deepest respects to Uhura’s. Christina Chong’s voice just does it. She’s incredibly talented.

I also know that Kirk’s presence has been controversial to some this season, as is Paul Wesley’s portrayal. As a fan whose favorite character is Kirk, and who loves Shatner…I have to say that I love this version of James Kirk and I’m really glad we are getting to spend time with him on this show. I think he’s great.
