Yep. A lot of plot points in Trek are driven by who's close enough to a signal or energy emission or anomaly when it hits the ship or station. One character can be a foot away but not affected whatsoever.

i thought that it was clear that the message was telepathic all along: that’s why it doesn’t turn up in the system.

The message didn't come through the communication system. She just thought it did because that's where she was sitting at the time. It was telepathic link
It didn't vanish from the log, it was never there in the first place.

What would be funny is if they found one actor to play both roles, since Shatner played his own dead brother in TOS.

The TOS movies were consistent with this as well. You had the "weapons console" on the refit bridge, but we see Sulu firing most of the Enterprise's shots from the helm console in TWOK. Yet, in the same movie, the final barrage against the Reliant was keyed from the "weapons console."

In TSFS, Kirk orders Scotty to fire the photon torpedoes from the navigation console.

There's a tactical station right behind the captain's chair in TFF, but Scotty uses the communications console to raise and lower shields during the emergency landing sequence. It seems Chekov fires the torpedo at the God Creature from the navigation console (based on Kirk's "Send it down now, Mr. Chekov!") in that same film.

I also always like how Joachim moves from "helm" to "weapons" during the Reliant's initial sneak attack.

In Star Trek VI, it looks like the torpedoes are fired from the helm console, using a "Mode Select" button.

In TOS it was probably a matter of hitting the colored buttons in the right combination, combined with those cool up and down audio effects to give them feedback.

Even as early as Mike McMaster's bridge plans in the mid 70's there was the suggestion that all the gum drop buttons are programmable. Life before Okuda!

Of all of the nods to TOS, obscure or otherwise, my absolute favorite is still Sam's mustache.

Not that I want this to be The Kirk Show (much) because I love SNW, but now I want Mom and Dad Kirk to show up.

And seriously, where are Sam's kids?

One of the strangest things I found about James Cawley's fan series was the sudden inclusion of Ensign Peter Kirk on what presumably was the last year of Kirk's 5 year mission. That's assuming he graduated in 3 years, and since a MAJOR subpolot of the show is Peter about to marry his boyfriend, that means he has to be at minimum 18 in 2270 and presumably 15 in 'Operation: Annihilate' and somehow literally went straight to Starfleet Academy right after his parents and siblings were killed. I mean it kind of works if you squint but it didn't seem to be the most natural timeline to take the kid we saw in Operation Annihilate into.

Of course this makes Chris into Kirk's boss' boss. Which MIGHT have come up in The Menagerie. But I can live with it.

No, it makes Pike his superior officer. The point being they are both assigned to different ships. So no, Pike isn't Kirk's direct boss - although yes, there might be a situation where Pike would give an order to Kirk and following chain of command Kirk would be obliged to obey it.

(Still, the way they are doing the relationship in SNW at least tracks with Kirk getting a little more personal with Pike in TOS S1 The Menagerie as I would have an issue with the way Shatner (as Kirk) delivered the line: "Chris...if there's anything I can do?..." and later "Chris, do you want to go there?"; IF they had only met once and maybe just saluted each other as Pike handed command of the 1701 to Kirk. Everything\ng in The Menagerie tracked with Pike/Kirk knowing each other a bit more that meeting just once in passing (IMO); and I think they're handling showing the start of that relationship well.)

"I met him when he was first promoted to fleet captain" ...But we've worked together many times and frequented several bars together since then...

This week's episode was just... okay. The plot was so reminiscent of TNG's "Night Terrors" and "The Loss" that it was kind of boring to watch them spin their wheels on this for 40 minutes. It felt padded, like there were too many scenes of Uhuru experiencing the messages and we all got it after the first 2 sequences.

Also... Pelia - am I the only one who has trouble understanding her lines? The accent that she has adopted is so thick that I think I struggle to figure what she is saying.
