And that makes Chapel a "Karen". Demanding to speak to the Manager (Yellow) after Blue would not help her.
There are times when it is perfectly appropriate to ask to speak to the manager in an attempt to resolve an issue. Doing so does not automatically make a white woman a "Karen."

Karens do so in a belligerent manner and make unreasonable demands to establish dominance over "the help." Chapel did not behave in the manner of a Karen.

Nuance and context, how do they work?

Vulcans aren't admirable because their whole society never seems to think that there may be alternatives rather than an unhealthy suppression of emotion. In some ways they're Trek's version of the Jedi. They have good PR but when you see what they do to their young people it starts looking really questionable.

T'Pring's day job is basically forcibly removing emotions from Sybok. You probably could make a Vulcan horror story out of it.

Not until after you've spent an hour cleaning the grill, because Vegetarians don't want their vegetables contaminated. Considering their sense of smell, I doubt a human could clean a BBQ grill to a Vulcan's standards.

Of course is "cleaning" something they even do in the 23rd century?

Recycle and refabricate.
You'd probably have a seperate grill for Vegetarians to cook with.

Riker said that (all?) humans in the 24th century are Vegetarians.

What about 23rd?

Maybe Vulcans are such assholes, that they put up a pretentiousness stink about lowering themselves to eat vegetables that look like meat... Or they are so dumb that they that they think that Earth vegetables that look like meat is real meat.

A simple misunderstanding that comes from being a presumptuous tossing prig.

He was kind of gross actually. But art often transcends its maker.
Very much so. I try to take Gene as a very human man who had wonderful ideas, powerful dreams of a humanity that was free economically, socially, scientifically, and sexually, to explore the human condition.

In reality, he was a horny, lecherous, fairly greedy man, but that was his baser human nature which clashed with his idealism, and I do believe he really tried to be better than he was, but like all humans he would crash to earth and make things worse for the people around him, including and especially the people he cared about.

He might have been even worse than that. Some fans who read Grace Lee Whitney's autobiography think he might have been the unnamed executive who attacked her, but admittedly it was never proven either way.

I didn't want to say it because she never says, but he was my first thought, though in all honesty, there were a lot of executive producers back then, wandering around looking for prey.

True, that one can read the description of her assailant and say "could have been Gene" really doesn't speak well of him. I sincerely hope it's not true, but I don't think we'll ever know.

That said, Gene did sleep with Grace Lee Whitney, Majel Barrett, and Nichelle Nichols, according to their respective biographies, and I have no reason to doubt them. Gene's ideas were wonderful, his hope for humanity powerful, but he sure did love to take advantage of people in the here and now. :(

I gotta say, I think your read on what she does is not accurate. I don't know what's up with Sybok or that she even knows who he really is. (Hope she finds out). From what I understand, the place she works is for Vulcan criminals who want to be rehabilitated (returned to logic). It's an alternative to a prison that might not meet their cultural needs re: rehabilitation. It's not for Vulcans who've merely rejected logic as a guiding principle. (Although I'm sure those people don't get the good jobs.)

That's news to me, eating replicated meat = Vegetarian?

Right at the beginning almost.

TNG The Lonely Among Us.

The Anticans have long white eyebrows, and white facial hair, and have sharp teeth like a mongoose)
TASHA: Sorry to call you, sir. Not strictly security. It's about the dietary requirements of the Antican delegates.
RIKER: I thought that had been taken care of in advance, Tasha.
TASHA: So did we, sir. Their live animals were beamed aboard. We were going to preserve the meat for them, but they say we must bring it to them alive.
RIKER: Then do so. Lieutenant Yar was confused. We no longer enslave animals for food purposes.
ANTICAN: But we have seen humans eat meat.
RIKER: You've seen something as fresh and tasty as meat, but inorganically materialised out of patterns used by our transporters.
ANTICAN: This is sickening. It's barbaric.

Synthisizers vs. REPLICATORS.

That quote, not only is it meat, but its the same meat day after day, year after year.

Ironically... Will, as a transporter accident himself, just successfully lawyered himself out of his human rights, which is what he failed to do to Data in Mesure of a Man.

He's batting .500

I love T'Pring in SNW. Not only is she downright hot, but she's an interesting, intelligent character. And, yes, I can totally see her becoming the T'Pring we see in Amok Time.

In addition to the cool stories, one of the things I like about SNW is how it provides backstories to things we see in TOS. Like M'Benga suggesting that Spock plays the instrument. So far the backstory for Spock and T'Pring has been a joy to watch.

I don't know. The very next Vulcan episode on TOS had Sarek concealing a serious heart condition from his wife and ghosting his son for eighteen years because of his career choices. It also had Spock admitting that his father was perfectly capable of killing in cold blood if he had a "logical" reason to do so.

And need I mention Valeris?

Just because Spock is admirable doesn't mean that all Vulcans are admirable. Lord knows the ones I grew up on weren't.
Sarek, Taurik, Selar, T'Pan in TNG, Tuvok and Vorik in VOY. Those were the ones we saw over the years, and then ENT showed the 'bad' ones. That's why they seemed so different.

That ceiling decoration is amazing!

This episode was just entertaining from start to finish. Something that's rare in Trek of any kind in the past twenty-odd years or so.
Agreed that it was entertaining from start to finish. But I found the manner in which it was entertaining was interesting itself. It started as kind of a goofball episode with Spock suddenly being human. Plenty of humor. And even the trans-dimensional aliens were a bit goofy. All fine for a comedy episode.

But then it switched gears a bit and got emotionally deep, first with Spock and his mother and then with Christine. Smooth transition that worked.

So, entertaining from beginning to end but different from beginning to end too. :techman:
