Why not hit a 5 minute rewind button and redo the fatal encounter?
Because then the writers would have had to come up with a different justification for La’an to meet alternate Kirk, go back in time with him, and get her heart broken.
Why not hit a 5 minute rewind button and redo the fatal encounter?
I hate time travel stories but even this one just feels like one of those random freak accidents. Even time travel can't save a life every single time. Why not hit a 5 minute rewind button and redo the fatal encounter?
That's why I don't like time travel stories, too many possibilities...
Since we have insufficient information to conclude what his mission was, why assume he failed in duties? It could have been a recon mission, or he assumed he wouldn't be in war zone and the time line shift (alluded to in the episode) caused something to happen that wasn't expected.Like I said, bulletproof vests are definitely a thing, have had them for years IRL. And the agent didn't appear to be shot with a futuristic bullet. (Assuming there is such a thing.) I guess he got overconfident and didn't think he needed one.![]()
But of course. No time travel story survives scrutiny. Only way to keep blood pressure at an even keel is take such stories as given and decide whether you enjoyed it.I may loath time travel stories, but each one will fall apart if we play this game.
What about ST09?No time travel story survives scrutiny.
What about ST09?
But did it survive scrutiny?
How does it not survive scrutiny?
None of that means the time travel story doesn't survive scrutiny.
Not exactly.ST09 took place entirely in the different universe.
In other words, no time travel story survives scrutiny when time travel stories that survive scrutiny are defined to not actually be time travel stories. And while time travel was used to throw Spock and the Romulan ship into the past, it's not actually a time travel story.
Not exactly.

You and I will never agree on this point, but I could make all those things work, even if the way the film presents it is not great.1. Cadet to captain in basically one move.
2. Chekov being born much earlier.
3. Kirk being thrown onto a planet instead of the brig.
4. The Enterprise looks like a damned hot rod, not a ship of exploration. (This is more a personal thing, as this was the final straw in why I never saw it in the theater.)
Like I said, it does take place entirely in an alternate universe, but there were a bunch of things that just didn't make sense or work.

Save for Scotty but the rest make up for it.BUT... I will give ST09 credit for reigniting interest in the franchise again, and the casting was mostly on point.
Except for the flashbacks in the mind meld. The entire movie took place inside the new universe.
By that logic, no story is a time travel story, because if you take out the time travel part of the story, time travel is not part of the story! WAH WAH WAHHHHHH.And it's not a time story because except for how Spock and the Romulan ship appeared, time travel was not part of the story.
