I'd say it was a mixed first episode for me. There was some stuff that I really liked. The design of the mining planet was very nice - one of the great things about modern Trek is that we get to see actually cool looking planets, a thing that TNG era Trek always struggled with (mostly for technical limitations). The space combat was also well done, and as a casual WoWS player I had a bit of a laugh at the torpedo dodging (a legitimate tactic in WWII, though obviously not done in the same manner). The D7 design from Discovery looked great here, as did the Klingon costuming. I also like the basic idea of rogue Klingons and humans teaming up to cause chaos. Finally, Pelia seems pretty fun as a chief engineer. I like how she immediately called out the crew's BS.
On the other hand, I'm not super into the whole "stealing the Enterprise" thing again. I know it's a different show, but we basically got that in Picard s3 but with the Titan instead. And the Enterprise famously gets commandeered in TOS and Star Trek III. Basically, yeah, it is a bit of a Trek tradition by now, but it comes off as almost comical how frequent it happens. My other main criticism would be the whole M'Benga and Chapel fight scene stuff. I'm fine with them getting a fight scene and I'm even fine with the Starfleet Medical Bane juice, but IMO they really dragged it out a bit. It should have basically been one fight scene, not like three, because by that point the Klingons running in for hand-to-hand instead of just shooting the duo became a bit too comical.
Overall I had a pretty decent time with the episode. Not my favourite, but I've seen far, far worse before.
