Kirk asked for Gary Mitchell to be aboard his first command

I always found that wording odd. It sort of makes sense if he asked for Mitchell and was denied, but I don't think it's the proper wording if Mitchell gets assigned. Something like "You got him assigned to your first command" makes more sense.

Actually one thing they never touched on in this episode is whether Gary Mitchell was aboard the USS Farragut or not (or even perhaps killed in the Romulan attack on the ship.)

In TOS S1 - Where No Man Has Gone Before, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, states that Kirk asked for Gary Mitchell to be aboard his first command. So, given that the USS Farragut was Kirk's first command in the alternate timeline, one has to wonder what Gary's status actually was in that timeline.

Was he even on the Farragut and if he was did he survive the Romulan attack?

Maybe Gary Mitchell dies in every timeline too, in every universe where he serves under Kirk. Cosmic checks and balances.

Don't know why the site isn't displaying new posts on this thread for me anymore. Eh.

That happens to me a lot, if I focus on another thread long enough I stop getting notifications about other threads I've recently been active in.

A "Cage" Era Starfleet Academy shirt is being worn by a background extra in "The Trouble With Tribbles."
Yes. Captain Pike.

I highly doubt it. I think April's was the closest we would get to the blues, which I liked as a nice transition from the KELVIN unifroms to the TOS style tunics. But. I have a distinct feeling that the efforts to make each show feel a little bit different will result in the blues being retired.

Indeed. I had to laugh when I saw the "Cage" uniforms being worn in "The Man Trap" by background extras. It's been going on for a while.
those, like most other instances, could still be explained with transition periods.

Honestly the current situation works much better for me, though. In my headcanon Starfleet has a number of active designs and commanding officers can decide which ones approve for their command. This explains pike switching to the blue ones while on the discovery, sisko reverting to the TNG ones while on earth, the Titan still having the grey-shouldered ones and so on.
Of course at a certain point a design *is* retired, explaining why we never see early tng jumpsuit in late 24th century and even what was going on in Generations (the TNG uniforms were being retired and they went for the DS9 ones).

The pic of Pike and April makes me hope for a flash back episode under April's command. A simple redress of the existing sets and it can be a decade in the past, Make the consoles the grey color from "The Cage". Have Captains Winter and York* show up too.

*A couple of possible names for Pike and Kirk

What's with Spock's stating they'll be in range "inside of 5 minutes", shouldn't he have said 4 minutes 37.452 seconds or something?

I hope the ST: Picard people take notes, because the Strange New World's season one finale is how you do a Romulan episode. I didn't love everything about, or in, this episode, but I thought the remixing of "Balance of Terror" was pretty neat. I wasn't expecting Kirk to be in the finale, so that was a surprise, and I also didn't expect him to be in the episode as much as he was. I thought they were going to kill him off to really show how different this timeline is.

It was so neat seeing a version of the TOS movie maroon uniform, though I would've preferred just using the existing style without the SNW flourishes. I didn't think the maroon uniforms needed them, that they still hold up as futuristic enough.

I liked the Romulan commander (wish it had been James Frain though). And while I thought adding the Praetor was a bit much (that could've just been an admiral), I did like the actress. She reminded me of TNG's Romulan actress Carolyn Seymour. I also liked the design for a lot of the Romulan costumes and ships. The helmets didn't do it for me, but for the most part I enjoyed what they did with the Romulans.

I do have some quibbles. Ortegas felt too out of character for me, and I wish they had just given Mitchell those lines or brought in Stiles. I also wouldn't have minded a bit more changing of the cast here, like say having Chapel as chief medic or maybe Piper instead of M'Benga. I thought La'an was wasted. Seems like she would've been on the Enterprise bridge at least after the Farragut had been destroyed.

Wesley didn't sell me that he's Shatner's Kirk. He didn't really have the charm or swagger. And I never considered Kirk to be particularly brash or hawkish like they tell us he is in this episode. I did like though seeing his relationship with Pike, his meeting Spock, reuniting with his brother, and the tidbits we get about his history.

In a way I feel this episode undercut Pike. We see that he's not the captain that Kirk is which unfortunately messes up the geek debates about who is the best Trek captain now when it comes to Pike. While Pike is a good captain, we see that his caution would've led to millions of deaths too.

You are conflating behaviors with results. Just because a behavior leads to a good result, does not mean it was the best play. Or the reverse.

The way it played out, Kirk's call worked out. It could have been the other way. If you hit in 19 and get a 2, it does not mean it was the smart play.

Yes. Captain Pike.

I recall there was a season 1 TOS episode (can't remember which) which shows a female crew member wearing a Cage/WNMHGB outfit with pants. Y'know, beside WNMHGB and the footage of The Cage used in The Menagerie.

As for the SNW finale, I thought it was great, but maybe not the best episode of the season. I think its interesting how Pike seems to be a tragic figure pretty much glued to his fate, bound by both the in-universe unintended side effects of him not being at the training, and by real-world canon established in this franchise. It kinda reminds me of Annorax, who couldn't seem to have both the Krenim Imperium restored and his wife at the same time, except I would say Pike doesn't deserve his fate.
Paul Wesley's Kirk feels subdued, maybe too subdued for my liking. I'm not expecting Shatner levels, but I would have liked see more...I dunno...bravado? A level self-assuredness that I usually associate with previous portrayals of Kirk. They try to pump him up in that scene with Pike and Sam Kirk, but the Kirk I saw in the episode kinda falls short of Sam's description of him. I recall reading an interview with Paul Wesley somewhere where he mentions that maybe his portrayal of Kirk in this episode won't be the same as future portrayals in the normal timeline. That maybe this version of Kirk is the way he is because maybe he feels he's been on the Farragut too long or something. Like maybe his connection to the Enterprise is so deep that on some level he senses there's something wrong with the fact that he's not in command of the Enterprise. 8/10

I think Paul Wesley needs to hit the gym and gain some muscle, have a more prominent chest to fill out that uniform.

He feels too scrawny compared to William Shatner in his prime.
an easy google search shows how insane your comment is. Paul Wesley is in better shape than Shatner ever was in his life

Charlie's wraparound is closer in thickness and heaviness of appearance to Pike's in SNW. I had forgotten his brown tunic was a Starfleet wraparound until now.

I think it was a scene where a red alert was issued, or maybe Kirk announced something over the intercom. But I could be wrong, I haven't seen TOS in months.
