According to Henry Alonso Myers:

The Una piece is absolutely a cliffhanger. Part of that was because we felt like there was a big chunk of her story that we had yet to tell. We really wanted to dig into it and we had an idea about how to do a real straight-down-the-middle classic Trek episode in order to tell the next piece of her story, which we get into next season.

I admit at the time, when Akiva and I put that bit in there about Una in the Season 1 finale, we didn't really know how we get out of it. Sometimes at the end of the season, you want to pull as many threads as possible because you want to leave yourself somewhere to go. But since we're almost wrapped for Season 2, I do happen to know where we went and I'm really glad we did because I'm unbelievably proud of the Una arc that came out of it, and I can't wait for people to see it.

The only significant historical event that takes place on the Georgian Callander equivalent of Stardate 1457.9 is the ‘Battle of Ujëbardha’ where one of Skanderbeg's most important victories is won against the Ottoman army.

Nice! Originally I wondered if earlier mentions of Illyria were going to tie into Albanian history somehow, as the're one of the nations today claiming descent from the ancient Illyrians. A namesake of theirs even has a place in Greek mythology, though not sure how significant.

SPOILER: Sneak peek of Paul Wesley's Kirk from just completed Season 2!

Same here. He felt just fine to me as a Kirk with less experience, some certainty but not a lot, and little bit more self-serious.
Exactly. It felt like a Kirk who still had a little seasoning to go, but still had the same ideas during the Romulan incident (he was proposing exactly what he would do in BoT, even to the point of saying later that he would have blown the Romulans out of the sky).

While he takes command of a ship seriously, he has yet to be given command of a Constitution Class starship, and maturity may not be happening as quickly due to that.

I had no trouble at all with how Wesley portrayed Kirk, and look forward to seeing him in the second season (as does my daughter, who loves him!)

My thought is Kirk as we know him is shaped partially by the people around him. This Kirk never served with Spock and McCoy and probably never had to kill his best friend who became a power mad god.

Good episode! Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season one is just a consistent eight out of ten for me. Consistent B+ show.

My only real criticism of this episode is that we didn't see the return of Captain Angel and Sybok, nor did we get any sense of resolution on the ongoing Spock/Christine arc.

Wouldnt have Pike known something about Kirk. He’s got friends in high enough places to know about the kid that beat the Kobayashi Maru. And likely how he did it.

anyway, I’m rewatching Balance of Terror. They really should have had the SNW Romulans wear those gold helmets.

Since this was an alternate timeline Pike was probably asking Kirk to test him. "This whole experience has been weird as Hell. Maybe this is really Sam's brother but I just want to make sure."
