He said proudest, not biggest.

And no, the show didn't say that class of ship was new, only that his ship specifically was new.

Thank you for the line correction. I got the implication that it was a brand new type of ship. Certainly, they sent it out on its mission alone, suggesting there weren't yet other ships of its class.

We should also only really consider the few scenes before the comet battle for any comparisons, once he loses the Farragut Kirk knows his Starfleet career is over.

As for Ortegas, IME real life events in the UK in 2016 (Brexit vote), revealed prejudices from people I have known for years. Never underestimate your fellow humans unconscious biases. Ortegas lives and works on a Humancentric ship for a Humancentric organisation.
Indeed. The Vulcans, too, have historically presented humans with similar arrogant bigotry and bias, particularly in the era of Enterprise. Whenever a group of people things they're "better than" another group of people, bad things have a tendency to happen. They continuously looked down on us as in a similarly smug manner as Q (without the benefit of actually being god-like), considering us a "dangerous child race" and constantly chaperoning us and holding us back. Can anyone imagine being a lone human serving on the all-Vulcan USS Intrepid, for example? I suspect it would have been hell on earth, and getting blanked by the giant amoeba would have been a Sweet Release.

The Farragut's presence was more of a hindrance too. The SNW Enterprise took more less the same path thru the comet as the TOS Enterprise which put it on the opposite of the comet's tail. They could've then fired from a standoff distance and run when fired upon by the Bird of Prey (like how it happened in TOS). But the Farragut was where the Bird of Prey double backed to forcing the Enterprise to come to defend the Farragut after SNW Kirk decided to try and slug it out at close range instead of being cautious of the plasma bolt like TOS Kirk. SNW Pike's Enterprise by itself would've had more success, IMHO.

One small technicality that poked up here was the fact that in TOS, the Enterprise was effectively able to shadow the BOP and stay stealthy by appearing as a sensor ghost.

In this case you had two ships trailing the Romulan, constantly yakking at one another over subspace radio. There is no way the Roms couldn't have known the two Federation ships were right there following them.

So Starfleet were on their side of the neutral zone and Romulan were on theirs. That’s a very small neutral zone. :)
I seem to to recall whole solar systems were in there. Iconia being one.
It's pretty clear that what we see on-screen in SNW is not even pretending to get distances correct.

TOS was the only show which ever really got this right, mostly because they didn't often put two ships in the same shot.

Pike's accident also ended a massive warp drive upgrade (curiously for both Feds and Romulans) that otherwise would've been installed if Pike had averted the accident.

"Beaten. The Praetor's newest and biggest ship beaten."

Warbirds were brand new in "Balance of Terror".
Decius actually says " The Praetor's finest and proudest flagship beaten." He says nothing about it being the "newest and biggest." Nothing at all.

ETA: This is what I get for sleeping in and replying before reading the entire thread first.

Although this was pretty hit-or-miss from one episode to the next, and probably due at least partly to cost-saving measures for the show. I'm pretty sure they would've done a lot more shots of ships right next to each other if they'd had a bigger budget.

Still, it definitely feels right in Balance of Terror. Of course, in terms of look and feel, that show owes a ton to the movie it's based on and similar ones from that era.

The same argument can be made about Mount as Pike. It's a different take on a familiar character. Mount's performance, IMHO, has surpassed what Hunter did, if for no other reason than Hunter really only did one episode. Mount basically got to start from scratch with his portrayal.

Yeah, one episode as Pike vs 79 episodes and 6½ movies as Kirk is a pretty fair difference to me. It's hard, if not impossible, to be iconic with one episode.

Prosecutors conduct investigations in proper democracies and then get Grand Jury indictments. Una should not be incarcerated but out on some kind of bond because this is a nonviolent crime. Alas, for drama purposes she will be in jail probably without legal counsel or incompetent counsel provided to her. Her only crime is lying. So you boot her out of Starfleet. Her abilities are a big threat to some faction or other.
Why the sudden arrest? It's a very intimidating tactic. Usually you would just forward an indictment and then prosecute. Why is she in jail? This is political.
Militaries hold court marshals after bringing charges.

Una was arrested for various code violations and I assume a court martial proceeding will follow. That's what happened in the scene - she was told the charges and arrested. Any incarceration would only be until her actual court martial proceedings occur.

Edit - fixed an autocorrect typo.
