Thanks Mr. Awe. He was... and he was my Trek-Buddy for as long as I can remember watching the show(s)... and not just that... he also introduced my niece to Trek and when she was beginning to like Star Wars, he told her "Trek is better!" Haha. My dad, the Trekkie. I miss him every moment of every day.

Clearly he did, at least one right next to the bridge. He had reasons.

Kirk would have one for all that paperwork he has to do that shouldn't involve the crew. On screen, Kirk is the dynamic hero guy who doesn't do anymore paperwork than some yeoman bringing a report to be signed. Picard, on the other hand, is more thinker and planner so there are lots of ready room scenes.

I'm sure Capt Troy Tempest's ready room would have a cool elevator so he doesn't even have to leave the chair to get to the bridge.

I don't know about that, but I do see Pike pulling some strings and getting Jim Kirk on board as his XO while searching for Una

Because he knows that leaving the bridge to go to the ready room during some action is not only a bad idea, but more importantly, it kills the drama in a TV show!

I'm kind of joking. But I do think from a TV standpoint, having the discussions in the Ready Room rather than the bridge lessens the impact. Let's all adjourn and go have a meeting versus talking to each other from our stations.

Kirk is still my favorite Captain but this show has made Pike my #2. Picard's less-than-impressive behavior in his own spinoff series over two seasons hasn't done Jean-Luc a lot of favors.

Oh I don’t think that quite fair. Picard as a series is about Picard the man. TNG was more focused on Picard the Captain. The one really shouldn’t detract from the other…

That all combined really changes my thoughts as I rewatch TOS now. Clearly, Kirk is a Johnny-come-lately who isn't privy to the secrets! Pike knows a lot more about Spock than Kirk in TOS. Of course, TOS shows the beginning of Kirk and Spock's friendship, and that's what really shines through when watching it now.

Of course, I think we always knew that. But the neat thing about Disco and SNW is that they really emphasize it. Spock is going from Pike and his crew who knew a lot about him to Kirk and his crew who mostly don't (except for a few carry overs). And Spock seems to like it that way.

Right, which is why his remark to Pike at the end came across as so dickish. Pike doesn't have anything to learn from Kirk where learning from his errors and taking responsibility for his actions are concerned.

Yeah. Pike made a mistake. You know how I know? Because when Kirk and the Enterprise come across this adventure (in TOS), Kirk wins. Romulans destroyed (by their own hands) and no war started. Pike, Spock, Kirk don't know this, but those who criticize the episode do, yet the still defend Pike.

Yeah. Pike made a mistake. You know how I know? Because when Kirk and the Enterprise come across this adventure (in TOS), Kirk wins. Romulans destroyed (by their own hands) and no war started. Pike, Spock, Kirk don't know this, but those who criticize the episode do, yet the still defend Pike.

What mistake does Pike make though? It was SNW-Kirk that didn't listen and work with Pike during the comet battle and that cost the Farragut and the Enterprise's weapons which severely limited Pike's options afterwards.

The 2 hour truce that Pike negotiated was to get the Enterprise repaired again and at the end of the 2 hours only the engines were back but not weapons. This again limited Pike's options to attack.

Circling back to SNW-Kirk's blame game - he is mad and blaming others for his loss. But if you objectively look at his actions you'll see that he put them at huge disadvantage by charging in by himself and getting the Farragut destroyed and Enterprise's weapons damaged. Also, at the end of the episode, Kirk is in control of a fleet of robotic ships and he doesn't use them to ram the Romulan fleet? Ugh.

TOS-Kirk in "Balance of Terror" won by knowing when to runaway at warp and when to fight (at a distance). He got lucky during the 9 hour pause in their fight (staying silent) didn't result in more Romulans showing up. He also got lucky that he was able to play dead for the Romulan to come back and attack. If the Romulan Commander had it his way he would have withdrawn and the outcome would've been different. Coincidentally, Decius get's the Bird of Prey destroyed in both timelines.
