Given how often TOS violated it's own canon during the actual first run - sorry, nothing so far rises to the point of a 'soft reboot'. Hell, the Bridge in Where No Man Has Gone Before looks very different from the Bridge in the previous two episodes (as do the costumes) as it was the third episode broadcast - and they didn't even do a Starbase visit that we know of.

IE - If it's ALL taken 'as aired' there's nothing in SNW as presented that can't be reconciled with TOS via any further 'mental gymnastics' that it takes to reconcile all the internal TOS inconsistencies; especially since the events of TOS start 5 - 6 years (in Universe) from 'now'. ;)
Indeed, they did change the superficially but the basic layout remained the same. Here we have SNW with its ginormous ships and corresponding large bridge with double exists (in DIS season 2). And just like in the Discoverse, the bridge has a window which was never the case in TOS nor any other Star Trek iteration prior to the Abrams reboot in 2009. (Both the TOS and TNG writer's bibles mentioned specifically that the viewscreen was NOT a window. Perhaps Goldman and Kurtzman needs to sit down and watch the Enterprise D crash as well.)

No, it's not.
Great argument there.

And as we head into the season finale we'll have to wait and see how that pans out.

You both putting your ideals on another culture. Sorry but Vulcans are Vulcans. Did you expect every good alien race created on star trek to follow human ideals exactly? Come on man.
Vulcans are fictional, their culture can reflect whatever the writers want it to reflect. I'm also pretty sure that Sarek is shitty by Vulcan standards. Just look at Tuvok, despite being separated from his family he still cared for them and missed them. He was a great dad.

Explain to me why Kirk should be familiar with all races encountered by the Federation? Even he was familiar with the Gorn, they were not expecting the Gorn in that part of space, so why would he expect them there? I don't see how inconceivable it is for him to not know things.

Reactions: Sci
She isn't a real person, and she can't "want" anything. What she was depicted as doing was a reflection of the writers, and what they wanted.

As much as I love Spock and his issues with his dual heritage, the portrayal of his human mother's heritage being less important than his father's heritage is very much a reflection of the 1960s view towards women. The movies did slightly better, and DISCO tried to say that she was sharing her heritage, too. But even in DISCO, she is so subservient to her husband that she allows him to completetely screw up a human child by trying to force it to be Vulcan.

At the end of the day, I'd take a full reboot of the relationship between Spock, his mother, and his father to better explain his issues beyond "all of Amanda's culture and heritage were suppressed by her husband and she was cool with that."
I really want to see Spock's human relations in this series. Like his grandma who makes him anything he wants for breakfast.

My first 10

Very unhappy about losing Hemmer. He was one of my favorites.

Not a fan of Sam Kirk, so far.

Big Hemmer Energy will never die. It might be the host for Gorn eggs which then hatch and kill said body, but actual Energy? Never.

Exactly, no. But they're often based on one human trait. And their "culture" is a hodge-podge of human ones. Vulcan has a strong strain of Orientalism running through it. They're also created by "committee".

While I agree in principle, it's important to remember that extra costs like that affect creative decisions. Superhero comics as we know them wouldn't exist because the authors would be told by the bean counters to minimize crossovers and the use of other writers characters. You'd end up with a bunch of redundant thinly veiled character copies. TV tropes dubbed TV those "Captain Ersatz". It still happens occasionally, due to rights issues. It's why there is an oddly large number of Black heros with electric powers.

I consider that an acceptable trade-off to ensure corporations cannot exploit creators.

The MCU simply wouldn't exist, because the idea of massive crossovers would never have become a thing.

Or corporations making such cross-overs would have done so without exploiting their creators and said creators would be justly compensated for all the extra value their labor had created.

Hey Ya’ll. New member. 1st post.

just wanted to say I’m loving the series as a whole, and I enjoyed this most recent episode in particular. I like what they’re doing with Gorn as they seem to be setting them up as the series main bad aliens. So I suspect we’ll be seeing more of them as the series move forward. As to the difference between TOS Gorn and SNW Gorn - obviously technology, but in-universe, I lean towards the sub-species theory. Like Aenar vs Andorians. But we’ll see.

The one thing I don’t like, is that this most recent episode kinda screws up my Trek TTPRG game where one of the characters is a big fan of Gornean Sumo. LOL.
Welcome, Ruckie.

What is Trek TTPRG?

But when you do creative work for a business, aren't you creating that work for them to use, not yourself?

That's not the issue. The issue is, why should they get to keep profiting off of a creator's labor without compensating them for that labor?
