Yeah. Snarky. Flippant. Unprofessional. Neurotic. Just the thought of a nurse saying what she did about sepsis is just odd. And it's not relieving tension. It's not gallows' humour. It's just deeply inappropriate and jumps out.
What's unprofessional about it? People in professional fields act like this all the time. It's not like she's snarky with clients. They're coworkers.

Indeed. I'm snarky with coworkers, and with clients if they allow it and we establish good rapport.

People treat Starfleet like it needs to be something it's not.

I think it comes down to people thinking of Starfleet as a pure military and a lowly lieutenant talking shit to/about a ships captain. When it's been pretty well established that Starfleet discipline is pretty dependant on an individual commanders style.

That said, I don't like the quips either, but I'm not gonna say it's out of place. They're literally creating the place as we watch.

Why must there be a “humorous “ helm person?
Right? People shouldn't make jokes. Funny is bad. Down with entertainment!

Maybe they should watch S1 of TNG.

They must've hated Chekov.

In the case of Chapel in SNW doesn't she come from a scientific research background? The nursing business is her secondary position. Also she's a civilian contractor of sorts at this point. Military protocol likely not her strong suit.

I was talking about Ortega

It really doesn't. Not in the slightest.
Obviously, you've never worked in the medical profession.

Whaaa? I thought all doctors were blocks of pure ice.
Some would seem to think so. The vast majority of medical professionals I've worked with are irreverent, flippant, hilariously inappropriate, and a hell of a lot of fun to be around.

Gary Mitchell thought one of them was.
