i would gladly watch an entire Star Trek series about an O'Brien-esque enlisted man. maybe O'Brien

i did notice that Una has been a bit sequestered - not that she hasnt been a focus, but her screen time tends towards her alone or with one or two other characters rather than some of the other ensemble moments where everyone's paired off or part of the big group

i had simply assumed that as the biggest name in the cast that they were crafting shoots around Romijn's schedule to avoid keeping her on set as much as the day players, and to make sure she was the focus of the scenes she's in.

not necessarily because she has other obligations but because it costs more to have her on the call sheet, and isn't worth it to have her taking a backseat to Pike when he's the center of attention on the bridge

The writers said that the Gorn skeleton was there with the idea in mind that the UFP had never made contact with them. It was to illustrate how mysterious and out there Lorca was.

It's a bit of an unfortunate consequence of removing helm duties from Number One. She has no specific function on the ship, it seems. At the very least Riker had away team lead.

i had simply assumed Picard meant text on screens and not audio announcements
 
I've been busy offline and have been watching all of the SNW episodes late but I wanted to say that this is by far the best of the new live action shows hands down. These characters ring mostly true and it is almost a treat to be back on board an Enterprise exploring and investigating strange new stuff. No overarching universe ending threats every week. Just fun frontier exploring. I like it.

This episode gets a 9/10 from me.

They truly made the Gorn a vicious and mysterious foe again. The visuals were top notch. The Enterprise was outmatched and the crew had to think outside the box to save her. The Pike maneuver is definitely something Kirk would have done had he been in command. Got a lot of Starship Down vibes from DS9 in this. I enjoyed getting to know La'an better too.

One of my only very minor gripes is how much damage the Enterprise took so quickly, but they did not want to waste a ton of time on unnecessary exposition and taking battle damage during a firefight so I can overlook it. To lose all of their photon torpedoes but one that they couldn't even fire was a bit much plus all of their replicator technology. They'll be in spacedock getting repaired for a few weeks, but the audience will never know. Often the Ent-D was depicted taking major damage (Borg cutting beam I'm looking at you!) in an episode and we'd just see the standard beauty shot fly away at the end, obviously due to the film limitations of the day. But it was a nice touch this week showing the damage to the ship as they limped home.
 
Just watched it - best episode since the pilot.

Still waiting on a story to really grab me. On the plus side, the characters are likeable and the VFX sequences are fantastic.

Pretty solid 7 / 10.

To each his own. I don't think the Borg have been scary since The Best of Both Worlds, and I don't think the Gorn were scary before now.
 
I don’t want to rewatch this amazing episode as much as I actually want to, as I am scared that I will destroy my own convoluted head canon that sprouted out of my imagination as a result of the first viewing! I might just leave this one be for a while and wait until next weeks episode now… :guffaw:

Arguably they were in the first half of “Arena”. Having watched it straight after this one my memory of it still pretty fresh. And I absolutely felt they made a pretty good job portraying the Gorn as an invisible foe that caught the Enterprise by surprise and seemed to easily overpower them. I agree though, that the mystique was kind of gone the moment the rubber suit appeared on screen. :lol:

Another thing: I mentioned that I felt some story threads deserved another scene or so to wrap them up more satisfyingly, like Hemmer and Uhura and Una in Sickbay. Thinking back on the episode I also now remember that I thought there would be some follow-up scene to Chief Kyle having to leave behind another crewman. And also for some reason I thought we'd see the colonist from the beginning again. But my guess is the episode ran a little long so they weren't able to cram all of that inside there. Probably better than the other way around, I guess. :)

Yeah, the first act of Arena is excellent and among the better constructed parts of Trek. But, yeah, the rubber suit didn't work for the intimidation factor, though it is quite iconic.

speaking of seating, happy to see cross training in action. when the redshirts went down and Spock took a forward station and a few trades along the way of people moving to different positions to do different tasks, as in Balance of Terror and Naked Time.

i know that in later productions we just got used to people sitting where they were supposed to and calling up whatever function they needed to do from their regular seat, but onscreen it plays as much more dynamic to the drama to see them having to jump over to another spot to cover a vital role

It sure was scary to me as a 9 year old watching it back in '67.

Just like the first GODZILLA movie scared the crap outta me the first time I saw it as a kid, even though my brother told me it was a guy in a rubber suit.

I feel weird, because Una is actually one of the three principle characters that we have known since Discovery season 2. And unlike when she was in Discovery, She's no longer has a lot of sarcasm. Nor a strong personality that make me like her in Discovery. She become... well, side character that just be there for the sake of appearance.

Una had a episode on the last one. This was L,ans episode. It looks like some eps will focus more heavily on one of the main cast. For instance we had a Uhura episode in the 2nd one. I hope we get a Ortega ep soon.

Never watched Godzilla so I'll take your word for it.

But, the Gorn felt more scary in stills to me. But, I was 11.
