It always felt like a rubber suit to me, but the script was so great I felt fine ignoring the visuals.
IDK - they took out the three smaller ships using various methods, and truthfully I don't think Pike would have batted an eye about taking out the third one if the Enterprise have the capability to do so; but due to the initial surprise attack by the Gorn, that was no longer an option due to the condition of his ship.It was also quite nice that they didn't destroy the Gorn. They just found a way to survive, and run away. Nicely done.
The really astonishing thing is that these super future ships with their matter-antimatter power sources don't carry weapons that can utterly destroy any unshielded vehicle with a single hit.
They should throw malfunctioning 350 series air filtration units at them.![]()
100% Agree. It always felt like a rubber suit to me, but the script was so great I felt fine ignoring the visuals.
Yeah, that's what I meant. I didn't mean that they did it out of compassion or anything. It was just nice of the scriptwriters to find another solution to the crisis: escape.IDK - they took out the three smaller ships using various methods, and truthfully I don't think Pike would have batted an eye about taking out the third one if the Enterprise have the capability to do so; but due to the initial surprise attack by the Gorn, that was no longer an option due to the condition of his ship.
I was actually very happy they did it that way and didn't go with the oft used Star Trek trope of using damaged equipment about to explode
Isn't that what she did in this episode? At the very least Riker had away team lead.
For half a minute, yes. They were even beamed back offscreen. But aside from that very short outing they haven't given her much to do, job-wise. Again, if the First Officer has something else to do (helmsman in her case in The Cage, Spock as science officer in TOS, etc.) I think it's better.Isn't that what she did in this episode?

I've got a similar feeling with M'Benga and Chapel. Two main characters on the medical staff seems a bit much. I'd rather not lose any of them, however. The character is feeling a bit redundant to me right now, with La'an taking over as first officer 50% of the time. I'm hoping she'll get more of a role in later stories.
The things that just happen to come with meter-length POSITRON RODS? OMFG, you'd think a ship getting hit by one of those ought to go up in burst of white light. They should throw malfunctioning 350 series air filtration units at them.![]()
You're expecting the showrunners to care about precise established continuity; a few lines of dialog in a single episode aired over fifty five years back. I don't.Chapel eventually leaves because of Roger Korby only to come back in 2266 after Kirk's taken command. She'll be leaving at some point anyways because that's what her character history demands.

Seems logical to have some step in for the XO, if the XO is incapacitated. That's not redundancy to me. On the other shows we see crew stepping in at helm, navigation, communications and science all of the time. So why not XO?The character is feeling a bit redundant to me right now, with La'an taking over as first officer 50% of the time. I'm hoping she'll get more of a role in later stories.
You say that, but they already referred to her as a civilian in Episode 1 because she shouldn't be part of the Starfleet yet. You're expecting the showrunners to care about precise established continuity; a few lines of dialog in a single episode aired over fifty five years back. I don't.
