Good episode.

Disappointed we didn't get to see a Gorn. A look inside the enemy ship, or an encounter with somebody who dies would have been a way to show them without the complaints canon worshipers would levy.

I did find it interesting that La'an Noonien Singh would be allowed to keep serving even though her trauma clearly impedes her ability to work with others. That whole 'don't get inside my head' nonsense is very archaic thinking, and especially toxic. I suppose it fits with canon since mental health has not consistently been seen as a real concern in the entire franchise.

I wonder if the guy who died was Kyle's first love or something. I am making the dumbest headcanon about this Kyle and his future husband, the Kyle of TOS.

Sure enough. It was a 5 year mission but we only got 3. So there's at least 2 more years to go.
Actually there is no data to indicate that we got three years of a mission. TV at that time absolutely did not use a season equals a year. It's conjecture that people use but nothing more than that. (Even the people who worked for trek acknowledge that its just conjecture). For all we know we saw the 2nd pilot could be the first mission of the 5 year mission and turnabout intruder could have been the last mission of the 5 year mission. Or the inverse could be that every episode of TOS took place in a the span of even just one year.

I think Steve Shives put it best: That may have been the best episode of Star Trek in 20 years.

I was thinking it might be the most suspenseful episode in Trek history. BoBW has that incredible cliffhanger, but that’s a moment and this is a a straight 40+ mins of sweaty suspense.

All the more impressive considering we know the fate of the ship and many of the characters.

Well the semi-official chronologies sure seem to indicate that Where No Man Has Gone Before is a good year before the rest of TOS, and that the whole Kirk tenure is five years. Take is as you will, as it could of course be overriden by the series on a whim.

Admitedly, not a high bar to clear.

Yeah. I think, maybe, the last "great episode" I can think of us that one with a memory-lapsing Archer and a devastated humanity living on Ceti Alpha V. Which probably is sooner than 20 years ago. (Steve puts the last "great" one as the ENT Borg one.)

ETA: "Twilight" name of the episode came to me after a moment. Aired in November 2003 which okay, is around 18 and a half years.

Oh my this was excellent. Sciency and Trekkie to the max. THIS... THIS is what we were looking for in new Trek. And I guess they're setting the Gorn up to the be the new scary monsters now that the Borg have pretty much been decimated.

I still have some reservations about La'an and her background, but overall, I would give this one a SOLID 10.

In a small number of episodes, we are given information on the chronology of the series. For instance, in "The Deadly Years", Sulu said that he had served under James Kirk for two years.

SPOCK: Mister Sulu, how long have you served with Captain Kirk?
SULU: Two years, sir.

And, in "The Day of the Dove", we are told by Kang that the Klingons and the Federation have been at peace for three years.

KANG: For three years, the Federation and the Klingon Empire have been at peace. A treaty we have honored to the letter.

I liked much of the newest episode of SNW; however, there is a dialog line which I feel was awkwardly shoehorn into the episode as a homage to "Arena".

"The Gorn trigger a primitive, ancient, terror in warm-blooded species".

The original line: "Like most humans, I seem to have an instinctive revulsion to reptiles."

Given that Balance of Terror was one of TOS' earliest episodes, I wonder if that's a coincidence.

Was the “Gorn communicate with light” new to this episode? That doesn’t seem terribly practical, does it?
Sure it is. Tactical teams, and even hunters, will use hand signals rather than communicate verbally between one another on the off chance that the prey is listening in, trying to hone in on their location. This is lampshaded in the opening scenes where Una and her landing party are hand signaling each other on the colony planet, looking for survivors.

The two Gorn ships were right next to each other. They could communicate in total radio silence, their prey, as far as they know, none the wiser.

I've been waiting for that moment to give my first 10 for the series. It's gotten close and I'm already putting this in the Lower Decks and Prodigy tiers of where I rank Nu Trek (That's a good thing, because I love both the animated shows) so it was only a matter of time before I rated an episode a 10. This episode gets that 10.

This episode reminded me of Starship Down and Apollo 13. When episodes can remind me of other episodes that don't get talked about very much, that's a good thing. Starship Down isn't one of DS9's most memorable episodes, but it was a disaster episode that gave characters depth. This episode was a disaster episode that brought back a familiar race in The Gorn and gave all the characters much more added depth. That's the difference I'm seeing from SNW and Discovery/Picard. I already feel like I know these characters decently, and each week they add a layer to them. This week it was La'an's time to shine, but we also got some great stuff with Pike, Hemmer (Who is slowly turning into my favorite character) and Spock. More importantly this feels like a great crew, and a crew I don't mind spending time with each week. I also loved the movie quality of the black hole, the brown dwarf and just the entire visual effects of this episode was well done.

I also thought this episode reminded me of Apollo 13, mainly when Pike said that this would be their finest hour and then hailing the cargo bay at the end waiting and hoping. Then you get the music in the background and I actually smiled.

I suspect they want to get to Kirk as soon as possible. It's easier to get better ratings with such a established character. The actor playing Kirk is already in his late 30s he can't wait too long. Maybe Pike will do 3 seasons. These producers are pretty eager to replace the original show out of canon so it all fits better. I bet we even get remakes of old TOS eps

I foresee Paul Wesley as playing a Lieutenant Kirk not a Captain Kirk.

Hemmer: "The door is blocked, isn't it?"
Uhura: "It sure is."
Hemmer: "Well, I hope you have fulfilled your life's destiny already, cause that means we are sure going to die!"
Uhura: "whaaaat?! youzre joking right?"
Hemmer: "Of course I am. We just slip into those EV suits over there, get out the cargo air lock and climb into the hatch on the next deck. Easy"

I have no idea why they cast an actor that much older than the character unless they're seriously considering going into the TOS movie timeframe (and to be fair there's a lot of room after TMP to explore)

Does it really matter? Whether he's 45 or 35, who cares. Indistinguishable. He's TOS-era James T. Kirk.
