I don't know if it's confirmed but I'm choosing to accept that the Vance aide calling him evil is a subtle reference to the real world cockwomble.

Overall, I really enjoyed this finale.

One thing that kind of irked me. Why was Caleb's mom so angry at Ake? She blamed Ake for imprisoning her and taking Caleb. But she was sentenced because she was found guilty of a serious crime. She helped Nus steal a Federation shuttle and murder the shuttle pilot. She was guilty of theft and an accomplice to murder. She deserved to go to prison. And when you go to prison, your child will likely be taken away from you since you cannot care for them. Her own actions put Caleb in the situation he was in. And Ake did not mistreat Caleb. On the contrary, she searched for Caleb, took care of him like her own son, brought him into Starfleet Academy where he could have a life, safety, and an education. She should be thanking Ake for saving Caleb from a life of poverty and misery.

It's a major plot point in the series that Ake thought that the judicial decision she had to make was the wrong one. She resigned over it. Ake herself disagreed with your assessment.

She also made a deal with Anisha beforehand.

And again, the issue is episode one describes something different from what this episode does.

Anyway, I like the character of Nus Braka but I have to wonder about all of his pop culture references. I mean I do hundreds of them in my books but my characters are from the 20th and 21st centuries. You can make Chaucer references today but probably not "The Revolution will be Televised" 1000 years later. They ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT have the Price is Right.

I was about to say, I believe we heard the Federation anthem at least once

I looked it up:

It does? Refresh my memory.

Your books?

Nus does rhyme with Bruce...

Nus Forsythe, "Nice to beam you, to beam you nice ..."

"Cuddly Toy"

  • In "The Wounded", Captain Maxwell blows up multiple Cardassian cargo ships.
  • "A Piece of the Action" has the Enterprise use stunning phasers on the Iotians.
  • Benjamen Sisko destroys the atmosphere of a planet that forces the Marquis to flee in "For the Uniform."
Also, Nus' father had started firing first so it wouldn't even be at civilians.
Don't forget the virus they infected the Founders with during the war.

Yeah, they hate making new sets. Like when they built that huge alien market set for last episode. :vulcan:
That was the Volume using reused set pieces from Picard.

Anisha I felt really brought this episode down, she's not a good person and not a particularly strong character. She doesn't really have any redeeming qualities and doesn't seem to commit to being a good parent or a criminal and is kind of just a boring drip.

I honestly don't care if we never see her again. The character doesn't work fot me at all and would need a serious retooling to be engaging.

Keep in mind when arguing Anisha's culpability.

This is the future where they could have entirely prevented the death by flipping the switch on their weapons to "stun" before attacking the shuttle. Which means, like it or not, both of them went into it with the mindset to kill anyone who got in their way.

Additionally, as Ake said here, since Anisha was the one who got the schematics to that shuttle, the crime wouldn't have occured in the first place if she didn't use those for it. So she absolutely IS responsible.

Depends on the weapon, not every culture creates weapons that even have a stun setting.

Liked the episode!

Now that the season is over, I can honestly say I loved this series; it has so much potential, and I'm rooting really hard for it to last its desired 4 seasons!

I do however have some criticism, on a more esthetic side and regarding the production... Others have said it, but the Atrium sets are way overused... They were used for Kasq, for Nus' trial, etc... I miss the ambition to be more varied when it comes to sets and locations..! And even in the later episodes, the DOTs that were present in almost every Atrium-shot in the first episodes, were all but missing..! Same goes for Lura: where was she in those final episodes? Except for some short scenes in Rubicon, I just really missed her there! It's a minor thing perhaps... But I hope season 2 will be a bit more varied and ambitious in that regard...
