Gotcha. I liked Shaw but he was just another one off character dunno why Matalas would be so intent on bringing him back as a cranky hologram.

I liked that he didn’t just bend the knee to the Legacy characters. And I figure that’s the same reason people don’t like him.

It made it seem like they were in the midterms of their first semester in the last episode, but it's not clear how time or classes work in the show honestly. Maybe they mention stardates in the show and I haven't been paying attention.

The flip side is that they did this to a minor character no one cares about. Not that the Discovery crew was all that well known either, but like with Detmer she was as close to being regular cast as she ever got when they gave her the mini arc in season 3.

With Jay-Den, they wrote him as ignoring advice for therapy and he "toughs it out".
Could be a sort of midterms test here, yes. Or just a test in general to see if the cadets have what it takes to continue.

Regarding Jay-den ignoring advice to go to therapy... I don't see why that's an issue. Makes sense to me.

Except we've seen phaser shots go right through Sam and not affect her. So these were likely something else.
It might be a case of SAM being able to anticipate the frequency of the Star Fleet phaser weapon and in this case, she wasn't able to determine that beforehand with the Furies weapons.
It also might be that since she was under actual duress and also trying to communicate with the ships damaged computer, adjusting for the weapon fire was beyond her capabilities.

I haven't picked a rating for this episode yet, still trying to take it all in after only one viewing.

What an intense episode! The Furies absolutely terrified me and are the scariest Star Trek villains since the Borg and the Undine (which is what Star Trek Online calls who you know as Species 8472).

However, the Furies still aren't quite as scary as the Furries (tribbles).

Those are all possible, sure. I'm just glad Sam isn't essentially invincible.

We’ve also seen phasers pass through the doctor in Voyager.
I know.

There was no damaging energy in those phaser shots.
Still was able to pass through her.

It would make sense given Starfleet's propensity to use holograms/photonics as security, that the Venari Ral/Furies had weaponry capable not only of killing organics but also disrupting/damaging photonic energy.

I thought this was a great episode. The 'downer' ending of a villain winning and there being an impending threat isn't something that trek does too often.

Killing the Vulcan and injuring SAM at the same time was good suspense, and the captain's backstory about her son being revealed during the tense dialogue kept me on the edge of my seat.

parts of it were cheesy of course, and may make plot holes, but for character development and world-building I thought this did a good job, and could serve as an alternate pilot for all the background elements that were revealed.

You're not.

Not to put words in their mouth, but I think Sakonna was wondering why people liked him as much as he did and I thought the same thing - not that audiences were supposed to like him.

To me Shaw was fine as a more boring version of Jellico but the character didn't really do anything special to spark so much interest in seeing more of him, so I was certainly confused by the fan reaction.
@firehawk12 is correct, I was referring to the audience reaction and not the showrunner intent.

But since you brought it up, it also was the showrunner's intent. Matalas gave interviews where he talked about how it was written to go from hate to love, we would meet Shaw as the asshole but ultimately go on a journey of him being the hero, he was being set up to continue on "Legacy", etc.

I also think that's on screen. It didn't work well for me, but I did perceive Shaw's arc as directing us to love him by the end of it, but of course that's subjective and YMMV.

Matalas did say he was surprised by the extent/intensity of the fanbase love.

And he wasn't the only one!:bolian:

So, how did Cadet Pickford make it past the psychological screening to get admitted into the Academy? Between eating her comm badge, walking in circles repeating red alert in the premiere and now having a complete meltdown upon seeing a corpse floating in space, she really doesn't seem up to serving in Starfleet.

And before anyone starts with "she's young, this is likely her first corpse" I point out Genesis and Darem are probably the same approximate age as her, and this could well have been their first time seeing someone killed, but they kept it together a lot better.
Isn't it her who complains Sam is sucking all the energy out of the room as well?

I think for those of us who think Picard is a pompous prick, Shaw telling him to fuck off was a joy, which only could have been better if he had actually used those words. Although I remain disappointed they nevr gave Seven an F bomb.

An exciting episode with a decidedly more serious tone. I was particularly surprised when B'Avi died—I was secretly looking forward to seeing the cadets learn to cooperate instead of acting like rivals.

One thing that bothered me, though, was the question of why the trap was set. If the Venari Ral have a ship that can relatively easily destroy/disable the USS Sargasso with just two or three shots, why did they have to lure them away from the station? Couldn't they have simply attacked the station with their entire fleet?
