I'm actually kind of confused as to how this whole "once you hail a ship, they're infected" thing works. The ships are responding to an SOS from the fleet, but don't actually get infected until they arrive. Shouldn't receiving an SOS from an infected ship infect the receiving ship? Therefore negating the need to arrive at the scene of the battle.

But even if it does for some reason require the ships to actually show up at the fleet to get infected, doesn't Starfleet have a system in place to prevent the entire fleet from going to a trap just because there's an SOS?
I would think they do. Besides, lots of ships would be very far out (in the Gamma quadrant, for example) and wouldn't be coming, same goes for ships under maintenance. Fleets assigned to important functions, such as for example defense of specific sectors against the Borg, aren't all going somewhere else because there is an SOS in an unrelated sector. Obviously, the show is taking some leeway here to make it sound much worse than it is, and Ascencia can't destroy Starfleet as a whole (though she can give it a very bloody nose).

Regarding being infected: I think its simple. The construct needs to be relatively near to do its thing, and it's the construct itself, not a signal, that actively corrupts the ships. The construct needs a way to get in though, and apparently opening hailing frequencies is sufficient. Hence, I also think the vessels that aren't destroyed yet will regain control once the construct is shut down or otherwise removed.

The incoming ships are already infected by the SOS signal that was sent out.
(that's why when they arrive, they pretty much stop dead in space for a moment)

Upon arrival, the Construct was simply tapping into the ship's computer to gain full control of each one and then order it to drop shields as well as fire at the others.

Do Starfleet ships not have Firewalls? All that Gwyn would need to do is adjust the ships port settings to block the Living Construct from infecting the fleet. Alternatively, Gwyn could coordinate the creation of a network of ‘sandbox’ virtual machines separate from the LCARS systems on each Starfleet vessel for the Living Construct to infect and get ‘trapped’ within. If the construct infected a sub network via some form of contained VPN ‘bubble’ of virtual machines, then the Living Construct could be isolated from the rest of the ships essential systems, studied and decomposed via backwards engineering to be defended against.

I say that Gwyn could do this, as I know that she is good with programming and she will have a good familiarity with Vau N’Akat software and settings. She will also now be familiar with Starfleet computer systems so may be able to come up with such a defense. But only if it is not too late! :D

**EDIT**
They could even do this by tricking the Living Construct on to the holodeck and making it think that it was infecting a real Starfleet fleet of ships. The perfect sandbox in which to observe the Living Construct In action and work out a defense against it.

Heh ... you fascination with a 'Holodeck Theory' to explain all this, is bordering on delusional at this point.

This holodeck theory would *not* explain all of this, it could potentially help to *resolve* all of this. The only character that could potentially be running such a simulation though would be hologram Janeway, as real Janeway could be trapped in the simulation too. Hologram Janeway would have to end the program, explain everything to the crew, then either go with Gwyn’s plan to contain and defend against the Living Construct with a network or virtual machine computer systems or decide that she needs to destroy the Protostar as there is no other hope for Starfleet. In which case holo Janeway could beam all of the crew on to the Dauntless and steal the Protostar.

The “characters don’t realise they are on the holodeck” situation would usually be accompanied with the trope of not seeing any ship exteriors.

Maybe you’ll get a hat trick @Timofnine and not only does the final episode reveal a holodeck simulation, but also ends up being a back door pilot to your Seven of Nine spin-off, set on the Enterprise-F. ;)

It won’t be the Enterprise F, that has been in service for many years according to Terry Matalas. So it could be the Enterprise G, but the G thang Captain would have to be either Captain Snoop Dogg or Captain Kevin Bacon if not Seven of Nine, though she could take over it one day. They definitely couldn’t put Snoop on the F though as he is a G.

A holodeck can have external exterior ship shots/renders, but the crew in the simulations would not be able to see this as they are on the interior of a simulated ship. The Protostar holodeck might have really good processors and graphic cards and therefore be able to render such advanced things should any of the crew wish to ever go and space walk in a starship simulation or put on a VR headset ‘in game’.

A back door pilot to a Seven of Nine spin-off would actually be Picard season 3, unless they want to throw an Easter egg in to the Prodigy season finalé.

A hat trick implies 3 things though… this would only be two things.

1) Crazy Holodeck Theory
2) Seven of Nine
3) Enterprise-F

But it was just a joke. Maybe should have said stopping the Romulan Supernova instead. ;)

As for Snoop Dogg/Kevin Bacon, I’m assuming you’re joking too…

in Star Trek computer security seems to be a lost technology, Starfleet literally has a 4-digit password to gain remote control of a ship.

-_-

IRL, No Password is safe underneath 10 Characters with any combination of Letters, #'s, other characters. It can be easily "Brute Forced"!

I recommend 15 charcters as the new "minimum" for now.

By the time of Star Trek, you should be easily have Character limits that are up to 255 characters with accepting Characters/Letters/Symbols from all Federation Member Languages.
