Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I do, yes. And I agree with you that this is not fair to either the original characters and their actresses/actors or the fans of those characters. I'm getting VERY strong "These Are The Voyages" vibes here. That one was sold to the fans as a "love letter" as well, just as this one is now supposed to be "a proper send-off". One would think producers would learn from that TATV mistake, but I guess now we're not just making a final episode that has TNG - but also not TNG because we're not making TNG 2.0 - walking all over a show, now we're creating an entire SEASON that does it... :shifty:;)

I would have preferred for them to make another season with the characters they established. There was no need for the TNG cast for anything other than maybe cameo appearances. It's been DECADES since the TNG crew essentially split up in Nemesis. Jean-Luc served with these officers for maybe a fraction of his whole Starfleet career. It's beyond me why there is so much obsession around these characters (but then, I didn't grow up with TNG, I never watched it when I was young, maybe this has to do with fannish feelings of "MY CHILDHOOD", idk). TNG had its time. I wish they'd left it be. And I'm saying this as someone who loves TNG.

But, alas, they're doing what they're doing. All I can do as a Sir Patrick fan is buckle up and brace for the hate impact once people realize that this won't be the TNG nostalgia fest they're expecting because the show will still insist on NOT re-hashing TNG, and the other characters will be in places that are just as different as the one Jean-Luc was in at the beginning of PIC. :shifty:

I agree with you and I did grow up with TNG. The thing is, TNG already had a farewell (and Data had two farewells). So it wasn't that good so they are going to try again 20 years later. It's like an old band that does a farewell tour and then does it again years later because ticket sales were low. They should have just kept it at smaller roles for the remaining cast (Like Riker/Troi in season 1) and left it at that.

I echo what "All Good Things" had to say: if they want one more adventure then let them have it.

It's their time to waste, not mind. I personally ignore anything post AGT as far as continuity status because AGT is the best send off.

This isn't a farewell to TNG. This is the TNG crew going on a new adventure outside of TNG.

Good grief. At least in These Are the Voyages the Enterprise cast were actually in the episode, even if it was a complete disaster. This cast didn’t even get that much.

They all got scenes in the final episode of Season 2 though. I am guessing this was on purpose, and part of why they brought Elnor back from the dead despite him not returning next season, and gave a Kore scenes which were narratively useless. They were meant as "goodbyes" to the actors.

It doesn't make sense to blame CBS/Paramount when based on what we know this is the story that the showrunner conceived of and wanted to create.

The showrunner is part of 'CBS' for the purposes of the production of the series.

I still like to think that when Q snapped his fingers at Renee, trying to increase her fear, the opposite happened, and she laughed instead. Reminds me of when Quinn tried to kill himself on Voyager and instead all the men disappeared.

I think what S3 is mostly going to have going for it is stability. Among other things, S1 suffered from tonal tug-of-war between Chabon and the producers, and S2 had Matalas wanting to do time travel, Goldman wanting to do a psychological dissection, and the producers wanting more Borg stuff, and I'm not sure it all meshed well, not to mention Matalas tapping out to do S3. It sounds like Matalas is going to have more freedom to do "his Star Trek" for S3, and he'll be around for all of it.
source?
A while back on twitter Matalas was asked what a Trek show he had control over would look like, or what's the Trek show that he would like to make (I forget the wording). He responded that it was Picard season 3.

It's also been reported through interviews and social media from people involved with the show that Terry pitched the time travel story and the psychological look at Picard's past was Akiva's idea. Doesn't mean it was a tug of war or conflict that couldn't have worked better though.

I have seen no source that the borg was the "producers" idea and could have been part of Terry's outline/pitch for the season or developed along with other writers. He wrote the premiere where the Borg Queen first appeared.

Michael Chabon was still involved in season 2.
The Confederation timeline was his idea.

Michael Chabon has one "story by" credit (though not a "teleplay by" credit) in season 2 for S02E02 "Penance".
