Ok, Jack's deal *has* to be revealaed in this episode right?

WELL GUESS NOT

I can't even get excited over the red door cliffhanger, as it's functionality the same tease as Vadic's taunt last week that he'll "find out what he really is."

Them stretching the plot and mystery out like this is handicapping what had been an excellent season in the first half. It's like they don't have enough material and are just spinning the wheels.

Terry Matalas probably never liked that Picard surrendered in "Encounter at Farpoint", setting off TOS Only Fans for years to come. So he'll have Picard not surrender.
Right.

It's possible this is an overcorrection. Picard is so determined not to surrender that someone dies. Vadic has her moment of, "And now to show that my intentions are sincere, I shall kill one of the prisoners."
Right.

Keeps with the TOS Movie theme and adds a twist with Picard not surrendering coming with a price... just not the price of Jack. I don't think they'll kill him like they killed David. It'll be someone else.
Right.

But it will serve as another critique of the TNG Movies. Picard can't act like Rambo Picard and think it'll be consequence-free.
Wrong. That wasn't where they were going with this. Rambo Picard is nowhere in sight.

So, I was 75% accurate with my guesses.

That was spectacular. Four, five, and now eight - three legendary episodes of Star Trek, IMO.

This was a big damn return to form after last week’s kinda underwhelming installment. Absolutely loved the hell out of episode 8… and taking a lot of notes on how this season has been structured so far for some future writing I’m gonna do.

9/10
  • The only thing stopping me from giving a 10/10 was the way the slaughter of the Titan crew wasn't touched on in the end... how many people died? Common, need some kind of a reaction. Yes, a Star Trek trope, but one that's always really bothered me
  • Haha, a cabal of retro prairie hipsters, you don't say? A very good dig at Michael Chabon?
  • The was Spot a boy or a girl thing... revisited, but with a smile... plus Tasha... spotted
  • Data has been resurrected a la TSFS... I don't care, I'm happy... take that horrible season 1 ending
  • Fucking solids!
  • Did Picard's physical body go up with the Shrike?
  • Jack mystery box reveal is now 3 episodes overdue, but promised for 309
  • Finally the lights are on, and all 7 TNG characters are around that table again. Will you ever take those scenes for granted again on a rewatch after this?
Congratulations to writer Matt Okumura for an astronomically better second effort after 209 / "Hide and Seek" from last season

EDITED to add: you know you care for the background bridge crew when you legit fear for the characters. Sad to see T'Veen won't be able to make a LEGACY.

If the thing with Irumodic syndrome/Jack is completely unrelated to the changelings, it'll be kind of annoying.

I'd say because of Vadic's chunky diarrhea form, she was susceptible to the effects of vacuum.
