There’s 2 things to me that hurt season 2: the first and biggest was COVID. The next and almost equally hurtful is Matalas had to pick up where Michael Chabon left them and weave a story from where season 1 ended to a place where he could launch season 3 AND try to entertain along the way. That’s a tall order.
didn’t Matalas come in when most of season 2 was already written anyway?

That said, I’ve liked season 1 (the photography and the acting in particular were probably the best ST ever had), liked season 2 more but for different reasons and I’m liking season 3 even more, so can’t complain!

Also I cannot help but notice this "return to true trek" hasn't visited a single new world or new civilization.
visits to alien worlds is something that have been very rare since Discovery (SNW tried to correct this, admittedly), personally I always thought it has to do with the realities of today’s budgets and expenses, with the virtual sets they are using now an alternative to expensive on-location scenes is finally available.

I think Matalas was involved with Season Three from the start. It's the reason he turned Season Two over to Goldsman. He has the sole writing credit for S3E1, a co-writing credit for S3E4 and another solo credit for the finale

sorry for the confusion, I meant season 2.

Terry was on Season 2 from near the beginning. I thought I read somewhere the time travel was his idea.
Makes sense. He's the "TOS Movie Guy", so it's not a stretch that he wanted to do "TNG's Star Trek IV" for Season 2, just like Season 3 is "TNG's Star Trek VI". Add to it that he's also a huge BTTF Fan.

What I like about Terry Matalas is that since he's only four years older than I am, we grew up with all the same things, so I can read him better than I can read other Showrunners.

Matalas only did a few stories in S2, he was not the showrunner of S2.

So the nebula (that's not really a nebula) and the jellyfish space babies don't count?
Yeah and the crew were like "Wow! Okay let's leave and not do any research into these new aliens we have just now discovered! Right, off to see Geordi!" Admirals log: Remind me to tell starfleet about the space octopi.

To be fair, homicidal shape shifters on your tail does add a bit of immediacy to the situation. Can always circle back later to check on the space jellyfish (or send the Cerritos ;) ).

They ran for help with a badly damaged ship and a capable and very pissed off enemy on their tail. Geordi came up later when Starfleet turned on them.

Octopuses. When I was a baby biologist beginning my invertebrate zoology studies my professor informed us: "Octopuses commonly; Octopodes technically; Octopi never." The root is Greek, not Latin. I have to say that to me the nebula lifeforms look quite like cnidarians or ctenophores with eyes, rather than actual octopuses.
