Again, 3 blind mice is what Barrash tried to play on the trombone in Future Imperfect.

31 was explicitly not Starfleet though, it’s from section 31 of the federation charter. Which is what’s at the heart of all this really. At least Matalas remembered 31 are the villains. (Though whether that’s their lock up on daystrom is a good question)
Article 14, section 31 of the SF charter, not Federation. It existed in ENT, before the Federation.

Time to dig up exact dialogue. To clear this up one way or another in general.
(...)
SLOAN: We keep a low profile. Works out better that way for all concerned.
(...)
(...)
ODO: That won't be easy. If he's right and Section thirty one has existed since the birth of the Federation, they've learned to cover their tracks very well.
(...)
And that is how 31 should've been all the time. Some of the best scenes in the whole franchise.

What really bothers me in this episode are Tuvok's ears. I don't understand how they are not able to make prosthetics as from Voyager era. It looks so different.
Gee, it's almost like he's not Tuvok - perhaps a changeling? :p

Didn't realise Starfleet managed to capture that many changelings or that changelings were that actively involved in the Dominion War to allow that many to be captured and experimented on.

And then allowed them to escape for.... plot reasons. We saw Vadic killing her main torturer and that's enough. Done. Explained. We're seven episodes in. No security, no repercussions. When did said event occur? When did it start? How long ago did Vadic escape? It's such sloppy writing. And it's a pity, because Plummer's performance was great.

This is the problem, though - the TNG reunion is coming at the expense of a coherent story.

It's one thing to not abandon advanced AI, it's another altogether to use the experimental, unstable AI to hold the station's inventory and control its security . It's also extraordinary that Geordi and co would hook up said unstable, experimental AI to the ship such that it can take control.

For those who just want to see the TNG cast back I'm sure it's great, but it's becoming jarring for me at least.

I'd have been more interested in Spiner returning as just Lore, and part of Geordi's upset with Picard being tied up with how things were handled with Soji and Data in S1, that lost chance at closure. They decided to go in a different direction, and I can see why they would...but yeah.

This Changeling poses a threat the very existence of Starfleet and the Federation. Had Picard and Beverly offed her I wouldn't be losing any sleep over the fictional ethics.

But she needs to live for the purpose of the story, so she was never going to die in Episode 7.
That was the only thing that took me out of the scene a little bit. The rumination over ethnics while we the viewers knew she wouldn't die at that point. But it made sense for the characters at the time.

Makes literally zero sense when you consider Picard's reaction to her history. "I didn't know." And he stresses that line... pure empathy and yet a minute later they're debating whether they should kill her or not. And they fire at her.

It's all about protecting their son, and, oh yeah, the Federation.

I keep saying this, but you don't fuck around when someone is threatening your child! Yeah, maybe he gained a bit of empathy for her, but she's still there to take Jack and ruin the Federation.

A comedian once put it very succinctly to his audience: "I would like to believe that if this building was on fire I would come back for you, and you and you. I would keep doing so until this audience was safe. I would really like to believe that...most nights. But not tonight. You see, tonight, my two daughters are in the audience. And while I would gladly give up my life for you I will not sacrifice their lives for you. So tonight, you better have the exits picked out on your own."

The son that Picard has only recently met, and one that Vadic challenges both of them about his origins. The conflict only happens when the script demands it. Picard had had enough with him 10 mins prior to him getting injured in one of the first episodes. This is not the Picard that I remember. The Picard I remember would have wanted to talk to Vadic.... uncovered the sh(5r in Starfleet. That would be far more interesting to me

Have you seen TNG: "Bloodlines"? Picard seems pretty open to the possibility of treating even a potential son as if they're a close member of his family, because regardless of how awkward or difficult it may be it's The Right Thing To Do. And doing things because they're right, regardless of whether or not they're easy or even make sense to an outside observer, is very much the Picard I remember.

I love that! And it's so true.

I take it you're not a parent then. Trust me, most parents will protect their children at all costs.

They tried talking and got nowhere. Based on her behavior, they accurately assessed that she was biding her time, wouldn't reveal more, and that their ability to control her was about to run out. Then she'd go after Jack and the Federation.

So, that's fine, you've got your opinion. I've got mine. But their actions made complete sense to me.

Very strong episode. Where was this quality writing the first two seasons of Picard?

Picard's action made sense to me but I was kind of hoping for him to show an act of mercy to try to prove her wrong about humanity. Especially since we know for a fact as an audience that Starfleet did allow Odo to go to the Link and that is what absolutely what cured them, so she has absolutely been lied to. But they really gave a lot of depth to a seemingly one dimensional villain. A being created by Starfleet with a time limit and then manipulated by an evil changeling faction.

Really hoping they don't kill Tuvok the way they did Ro, Hugh and Icheb. Give us a break, writers. Let some characters live.

I'm also wondering what became of female changeling in all this. Is she still in a prison somewhere?
