News flash: Trek has always used characters to "promote an agenda."

Now this was a little clumsier because its was Guinan and she wasn't herself but maybe a lot about her changed in the least 130 years and stuff about her will change in the next 300.

We don't know what 21st century Guinan was like.

They could've been a little less blunt or said something about a recent incident pushing Guinan over the edge, but using characters to promote an "agenda" is very Trek.

There's a difference between creating characters specifically to promote an agenda, and using old characters out of context to do so.

The new actress is 29, but maybe that's the edge of El-Aurian puberty?

This species must always be trying to ping pong and flip flop between very edges of puberty and menopause, and no further?

She looks it.
And that's great for a racist thug who wants to oppress her.

But it's not going to help her join an African American community if she doesn't know the history and culture of that community, and when she tries to share her values and history, it identifies her as at the very least foreign, or maybe Nigerian.

Did he live there for generations being treated like a second class citizen? I mean, why is this hard for you to grasp?

I'm pointing out the sillyness of your argument. Guinan is an alien, and a long-lived one at that. She's experienced more than almost anyone. If she was being treated badly because of the color of her skin, she could have just left Earth right from the get-go (or gone somewhere else on Earth in a few seconds where that wasn't an issue.) Saying that she 'looks African American' is a silly statement. So does my friend from Zimbabwe, but he's not.

Where was it ever mentioned that she was trying to join an African American community? She was just running a bar.

You think you have to be a member of a discriminated group in order to be offended/pissed-off about the discrimination?

Apparently Trekker4747 thinks so.

I don't understand the controversy with recasting Guinan for this alternate timeline. Using Goldberg would've strained credibility, although the other actor's rendition does seem a little generic at times. Still, the cynicism fits. Guinan had to start from somewhere or have her ups and downs.

Also, I read on reddit there's a scene in one TNG episode where Guinan says she likes bald men because one helped her when she was having trouble a long time ago. A neat retcon if that's what the thought behind her attitude was when first meeting Picard in 2024.

s03e06 The Booby Trap.

LAFORGE: As a woman. What's the first thing you look at?
GUINAN: His head.
LAFORGE: His mind. Of course.
GUINAN: No, his head. I'm attracted to bald men.
LAFORGE: Seriously?
GUINAN: Seriously.
LAFORGE: Why?
GUINAN: Maybe because a bald man was very kind to me once when I was hurting. Took care of me.
LAFORGE: I'd like to do that.
GUINAN: I take care of myself these days.

Above Trekker said she is African American because she looks African American.

If she is African American, then she is African American, which she isn't.

Part of It could just be the fact that the USA has begun setting up Sanctuary Districts that is making Guinan angry.
(since her bar appears to be right in the middle of one)

The "bald man was kind to me once" thing was covered in Time's Arrow.

Oh, for sure, Guinan got racist looks and behavior while on Earth. There's no way she spent time in 1893 San Francisco and wasn't treated like a second-class citizen because she had brown skin and was also female.

The word agenda sounds to political. More accurate to say I think that they have used characters and allegory to explore issues and all sorts of aspects of the human condition. In this case they should have just made this character her daughter or Turkim I think was his name. Isn't that her son who would never listen which made me think he was kind of a rebel of the family. Which then would offer a interesting contrast between how they see the word vs Guinan. While also showing one of her kids which has never been done before.
