It's the 24th century. More humans need to be depicted as a completely unrecognizable mish-mash of different ethnicities, and honestly they should be overrepresented in Starfleet if you presume most Starfleet officers meet their spouses on duty and kids of officers are more likely to go into Starfleet themselves.
Looking at the character and the name and even the actor who portrays him, he could easily be tri-racial, Asian, African and European with a bit of Native American mixed in. I’d guess an African American father or grandfather and a South Asian mother withFilipino and Indian and other ancestries.

I really liked this one a lot. It was great to get some backstory and character development for Rutherford. We learn a bit more about his implant. And the space race in the delta flyer was great. The B plot with Mariner and Boimler at the recruitment table was really funny. There were some great callbacks to previous eps. We got the collectors from TNG's "The Most Toys". The conspiracy theory guys reference the ep "Conspiracy" which was great. "No, that was a conspiracy". LOL. The archaeologist girl is an obvious copy of Vala. I do think Mariner and her will go away together. They seem like a great match in many ways. I think Mariner would be happier going off on adventures where she could whatever she wants and not be tied down by Starfleet rules. I also would not be surprised if they get together romantically.

Getting a lot of shots of the MSD this season

My take is that Mariner defines herself as a rulerbreaking and rogue but...isn't really.

And once you actually have her not under her PARENTS, she's actually Starfleet material.

Damn, that episode was fantastic. Everything this season has been good, as Lower Decks always is, but this is the first 10/10 of season 3 for me. Just a total home run. That Rutherford story was exceptional. I can't believe how emotional it was. It was upsetting to see him "possessed", in a way it isn't in most live-action Trek possessions.

I also got a bit emotional with the reveal of the imagined Tendi, Boimler, and Mariner in the Delta Flyer at the end. So satisfying! It is crazy how many different levels this show can work on, especially in such a brief running time.

This episode was so good, it might be just a hair below "No Small Parts"/"wej Duj"/"First First Contact" level.

Amazing episode, very very good story in a very very good series! I cannot stress this enough!

"Second Contact" written by Mike McMahan tells us Boims was commissioned in 2379, and according to Mariner's dialogue Brad's worked with her and the Cerritos senior staff for a year. (Based on the Stardate 57436.2, some would say it's Jun 8, 2380.) In the same episode, when Boims introduces Rutherford to Tendi, Brad says of Sam: "and, as of a couple weeks ago, cybernetically enhanced!", Tendi eagerly declaring she's never met "a recent cyborg". Much of Rutherford's first date with Barnes and also "Envoys", the whole season, really, continues to indicate Sam's implant is new to him.

"Reflections" also written by Mike McMahan, (set on potentially May 10, 2381 by the Stardate 58354.2), tells us Rutherford transferred to the Cerritos on Stardate 56329.4 (some might say that was May 1, 2379). This correlates well with the probability (but not guarantee) that Samanthan has slept across the hall from Boimler and Mariner for a year before they all met Tendi. There is good reason to believe that if Rutherford got the implant "a couple weeks ago", Brad and Beckett were nearby to see it for the first time.

The memory in "Reflections" strongly indicates Rutherford got the implant after an explosion while he's dressed as a "first year", a personality which Dr. T'ana says is from "a decade ago". Help me square these details, subsequent stories!

It's worth noting this is the first episode this season written by Mike McMahan, which may be part of why it seems a step above what came before.

It seems like in many shows when the showrunner is the writer of the episode, I expect it to be a step above the usual. This episode felt like a few steps above what we've been getting since the premiere.

Bit of an aside, but it's always mildly disappointed me that Mariner's parents are both black, considering Tawny Newsome is biracial. They had the chance to depict another interracial relationship onscreen and decided against it.

It isn’t all that surprising. I would assume Mariner’s parents, like a lot of African Americans, both have some European ancestry as well and are both mixed race going back a few generations. Her dad may have a Hispanic background as well since his first name is Alonzo. Speculating further, Beckett may be the surname of a maternal or paternal grandmother. She was apparently “Becky” as a little girl. Add more wild speculation — Beckett was the non-canon middle name of Jonathan Archer. In the books, Archer dated his childhood friend, Danica Erickson, the daughter of Emory Erickson, who invented the transporter. Danica is black. Assuming Archer married Danica and had children, his descendants would be mixed race. Beckett Mariner is pretty darned entitled and has avoided being drummed out of Starfleet and sent to a penal colony like Tom Paris, another scion of an important Starfleet family. Wouldn’t it be a major embarrassment for Starfleet if a descendant of the first Federation president and the inventor of the transporter as well as the daughter of a Starfleet Admiral and Captain acted like Mariner? Pretty bad publicity. Just saying.

Best episode of this season so far.

Loved the Kirk/Spock theme park type 'put your head in' display (drawn in the TAS character style) to the rear right of their Starfleet booth. Also loved all the call outs to the (now in universe) fan debates over aspects of Starfleet.:guffaw:

"We're NOT in the military...!"
