What exactly don’t you understand about her Dad being an Admiral and her Mom being a starship captain? She likely is far more mature than others at her level, especially considering she has been promoted and demoted already in her career.

And she isn’t the first character in Star Trek to question the orders of those above her. Not by a long shot.

Actually, I think it's to get back at her parents - BOTH of whom are fairly high ranking Starfleet officers. She's just using the situation she's in and whatever she has at hand in the endeavour.

I think the parents are part of it. My guess is that they put a lot of pressure on her. Her mom is a starship captain and her dad is an admiral. That's quite a lot to measure up to. And Mariner probably tried her best to measure up and it was never good enough. And then she gets demoted for reasons she disagrees with and she finally said "screw it. I'm just going to do my thing and not try to measure up anymore."

I'm liking Mariner a lot, and she definitely isn't a Mary Sue. I just find it tedious that she's the heroic one who's always saving the day while Boimler is the whining wuss who's the source of ridicule. Any chance the latter can do something great for once at Mariner's expense or is that not allowed because he's a white male?

I don't think they have the guts to show the white male showing up the black female, but I hope to be proved wrong.

But, if she was a "competent Starfleet officer who knows what she's doing" she wouldn't have gotten him drunk considering the trip he was on.
