Star Trek Equinox

James Cawley is no longer involved, at least according to what's on their Facebook and Kickstarter pages.

James Cawley also came onboard as Executive Producer at NYCC 2014 (Unfortunately according to "King" he will not be able to participate due to his Elvis Touring schedule.

That's to bad for them, they really need to have someone 'credible' (like Cawley) behind this if they want to achieve there goals. It does not surprise me now that I know Eric (Savage's nephew) is behind this project, he is the type of guy with many grand idea's but does not have the experience (he is a radio DJ by trade) or patience get a project like this done with out help.

It says a lot about the level and self-respect that people here now hold in the fan film community that Cawley is credible but the two actors from TOS and VOY are not enough to make the film credible. (And Stan Lee seems to have moved on to the Farragut spin-off, Star Trek: Isolation. I keep wondering if he'll play the part of the creator-god of an alternate universe.)

I think there is a difference between an actor and a producer. Cawley certainly has proven he can produce, so loosing him put another blow to this production. We would probably all like to see John Savage in such a production, but one good actor doesn´t make a whole production. And since they are at it for now I think over a year, without much to show, I wonder where all that work went into?

I have my work schedule which is heavy, but that is not the only reason I chose to leave the Equinox project, My sentiments about this project, which I have also shared with Eric Nyenhuis are that He is not a Producer, he does not understand how to go about doing things and the time it takes to get them done properly. The script for the film is Absolute drivel filled with every bad cliche ever from Trek. I was working on a new story with another very talented writer for them, but I just could not get Eric to slow up and put things in perspective. You can't raise support and funding when you have nothing to show. He won't hear that from me. He really wants to do this and I hope he can find his way, as I wish them the best.
It just boils down to I don't have the time for all that. I have a job and my own hobby group to take care of.

Thanks James,

I have a similar experience with Eric, but with putting a Scifi convention together in 2011. He had these massive grandiose idea's but could not deliver on some of the fundamentals needed to pull off what he proposed. He is a nice guy, and like you, I wish him the best in his endeavors. For this project he needs to hand over the reins to someone more experienced or scrap it all together IMO.

Even I have gotten a phone call from Eric. It pre-dated James' agreement to work with them, and I was very surprised when James agreed to work with them. I couldn't hold a single conversation with him, so it's a testament to your patience, James, that you stayed with it as long as you did.

Looks like they hit and passed their target.

I try not to comment on these things much, but I do donate to a fair few of them, and I'd like to offer some advice to the people who are working on this, and also tell them exactly why I haven't donated to a single one of your fundraisers.

Firstly, my apologies but the premise just doesn't grab me. Yes, Equinox was a fun episode of Voyager, Ransom was a good (and compelling) guest character, and Savage is a very talented actor. But Ransom's story was wrapped up pretty well, and I can't say I've ever had any great desire to see it continue. The idea of a time-travelling Ransom going back to the TOS era and ending up on a past Equinox (with a no-longer dead and omnipotent Gary Mitchell) is really not a tale that appeals to me in any way, shape or form. Fanfilms are often ridiculed for the hokey plots and excessive fan service, and this one is almost the embodiment of that criticism. Now I realise this is a matter of personal taste, but it's by no means an isolated one, so perhaps it's something to keep in mind.

Secondly, while I don't doubt the production team's heart is in the right place, they just never seem to be able put their best foot forward. Telling us how great the story is and how it's going to be the best fanfilm ever (that's an entirely subjective thing by the way, and also a pointless argument) comes across as immodest, and frankly unlikely, given the way Equinox's public statements are worded. If you're going to try and sell yourself as the best ever, at least start with your public face and press-releases. At least spell and grammar-check before posting, lest people simply dismiss such statements as hyperbole.

Thirdly, credibility. Telling us you've spent tens of thousands of dollars going to conventions and shooting footage, but couldn't manage to keep a few thousand aside for editing that footage into a trailer, doesn't really engender any trust in your ability to actually make a film. Balancing the budget is an essential part of the process, especially if you're expecting others to help pay for it.

Now that said, Equinox has a lot going for it. You all clearly love what you're doing. Savage is a fantastic actor, and having Garrett Wang on board is really quite a coup. It would be a shame if you didn't get to make the most of that. So I hope you will take this criticism in the spirit it's meant. Nobody wants to see you fail, but if you want people to support what you're doing, I'd hope you would take some of these thoughts on board.

Interesting - how did that happen? The sums of the donors not even add up to 2K.

Well, I´m looking forward to the trailer...

Sounds like the trailer may only be available to donors and at conventions, at least that's my reading from their Facebook comments. Maybe they'll release it later down the line.

Well said, sir. Well said.

Thanks. I'm genuinely not trying to be a dick. :)

No one would ever accuse you of that Nick.

Equinox has huge problems according to everyone this Eric guy has tried to get to work on it. My understanding is he has burned Cawley, Broughton, Peters, Marshall and even Richard Hatch and Doug Drexler. Do a Google search for him and you find a LOT of people in the wrestling business have it out for him for scamming them.

I wouldn't give them a dime.

Just found this Resilient - what a trainwreck of a presentation. Although the concept art really looks great and the idea interesting - that´s a good example on how not to do it.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2078820888/resilient-3-d-sci-fi-feature-with-robert-beltran

Was that Kickstarter just for the 3D version or for the general version of the movie? I just feel sorry for Robert Beltran - I´d love to see him in a movie again.

When I see "We are a group of independent film professionals, backed by an international sales and production company – MonteCristo International Entertainment, with many years of experience in producing and selling independent feature films around the world." as part of the pitch.. why do they need my help?

Looks like the Equinox folks have successfully raised what they needed to edit their first trailer (sorry Maurice :) ) I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but they will only broadcast the same trailer to funders only?

Fundraiser just for a trailer... What's the point? Do a fundraiser for the entire production, then cut the trailer from that. There are hundreds of 14 year old kids on Youtube that could put together a trailer for free ;), why ask fans for funds for just a trailer. Makes no sense and destroys credibility.

I agree, that was no trailer but more like the first act. They should have probably taken a bit more time to polish it.

Generally I can see a lot of potential, but it looks rather unfinished in a lot of areas - expecially in terms of editing and some of the VFX. Some shots really look bad (e.g. the shuttle interior).

John Savage seems to be only one who can really act and it is a pleasure seeing him again. But that Vulcan female... Opposite him it becomes extremely obvious that her acting skills are rather limited.

I don't know were to begin ... Im glad they put something out but I agree with Northstar, needed a bit more editing and polishing.
