The thing is, they clearly could have had this planet-side adventure without the complaints with a tiny bit of extra writing. Basically just have Michael say at the beginning of the episode they attempted to breach the field between episodes, and couldn't make any headway, and were investigating a nearby planet for clues.

Can't recall an instance in berman era Trek (or TOS for that matter) where the space suits weren't air tight... in fact, when something went wrong, it was because a suit ended up damaged (which is when problems started to crop up).
The suits didn't only protect against 'known substances'... they were air tight (meaning no foreign substances - apart from maybe certain types of radiation which is an entirely different category) could have affected the person inside the suit.

Yes that shower curtain on Naked Now was up to the job for sure.

I'm all for calming down. But you can't calm down when you have an Earth/Vulcan destroying DMA on the loose. Then slowing down doesn't make any sense... It doesn't make any sense to talk about feelings and emotions all the time when there's a time bomb waiting to go off.

Yes, Discovery should calm down, but they should also stop with these Earth/Federation/Galaxy destroying plots if they do so! Otherwise you're losing any sense of urgency. That is what's happening now and it's bad writing!
Yeah, you can. It's a threat that's in the background. They have X amount of time to communicate with Species 10C until it makes its next move. But until Species 10C makes its next move, it's not going to do anything.

Honestly, this episode largely met my expectations based upon the trailers. I had no expectation whatsoever we were going to meet Species 10-C. I knew it was going to be wheel spinning for the most part. But at least we learned a few things about Species 10-C finally, and the planet-side adventure was decent on a show where you can probably count episodes they've gone on an away mission on two hands still.

coming from someone that was complaining a lot about Picard earlier today, writing he hopes the series ends, these words sounds…strange.
I'm not moving on with Picard. No interest.

I've been told for years now that Discovery isn't real Trek, that it is all action, bad writing, with poor characters. Now it slows down and it's considered poor Trek because Trek needs to be faster. They change the focus on characters and suddenly the main characters need more screen time.

I'm fed up. Tired. Tired of being told the Trek series I like isn't good enough. Discovery can do no right, no matter what.

Back to the episode itself.

I think Discovery is way off about Species 10C. I think everyone is. Species 10C will be ready to make its next move before anyone expects and anyone is ready. It's going to catch everyone off-guard.

Right now, Burnham is in the middle of what she's doing, Tarka's in the middle of what he's doing, Rillak is preparing for some speech or something else that will look good in her political record, and Vance is at Starfleet Command totally in the dark.

And then *boom* Species 10C. Species 10C doesn't give a shit about what they're doing, or what they're arguing about, or what they're hoping for. The only one who has any type of clue is Kovch. And that's the "important thing" he's working on.

Burnham might come up with something outside of everyone else's box, but it won't be outside of Kovich's box. He's the smartest character on the show.

Yes we learned they smell.
Or communicate by smell.
And those smells affect humans exactly like they affect 10c

Can’t wait for the universal translator to be updated for Smell-o- vision !

Please let next week be an hour of looking at the barrier.

I had the thought last night that this season of DIS essentially has anime pacing. An entire episode will be spent on one single task, broken up with long monologues.

This is not a threat that is in the background...

Actually, it is. Because you know that it can do something in the near-future if you don't stop it, either through force or diplomacy.

We had the threat of Nuclear War all through the Cold War and the fact that no one actually wanted it kept it cold, but one false move... We had the threat of another Twin Towers style attack all through the War on Terror.

If there's something dangerous that can happen, it's a threat. If it's not happening immediately, and in front of you, it's a threat in the background.

They don't know anything about Species 10C. And Species 10C can move at any point it pleases while everyone else acts hysterical.

Species 10C is what's moving things. And it'll move when it's ready. And that's when you'll see "Stuff Happening!" They're facing an enemy that doesn't operate on Human Level or an Instant Level. I like that we're seeing an exterior force dictate the terms while everyone else tries to figure out what to do.
