Honestly episodic is better.

Maybe they should just jump to a different alternate reality each season (like a rip off of Marvel's what if), but with episodic plots. Like for example they could jump to that alternate reality where the Borg assimilated everything and Riker had that really long beard.

I'm actually very curious Kurtzman's level of involvement in various aspects of the show. Whenever I see a stupid special effect (spinning ships, flashing lights, moving cameras, flamethrowers, etc.) in my head I automatically blame Kurtzman.
Moving cameras? What?

Do you mean rapid camera movements between characters during intense moments?

I'll give it a 5. There's a much better episode hidden in this one, and I think that's the one people are giving high marks. But it's ruined by slow story telling and logical leaps.

1: There was no need to suddenly require Discovery to be used as a lab for an incredibly dangerous experiment WHILE rescuing refugees. If the writers wanted to make that be a thing they needed a cause. None was demonstrated.

2: Murderer Prisoner Guy now takes that award for Boring-Ass Speech That Makes You Reach For The Remote away from Archer and his Gazelle Birth. At least Archer had the decency not to tell that one while a black-hole-thing was about to pop intp view minutes and kill everyone. There were other moments just like it that absolutely killed the action. Even Beyer can write better than that.

3: Burnham is now speaking softer and softer every episode. By the end of the season she will be whispering into a straw which is submerged into a milkshake. I get it, actors in general are on a single minded crusade to pass Matthew McConaughey on the road to perfect incomprehensibility. The less you are understood the more dramatic you are. Am I starting to long for the Burnham Sermons?

4: Risa. It's nice that Risa somehow remained a vacation planet.. through The Burn. WTF

5: Parasitic-Beings? Uh, please tell me they didn't scrape the barrel for one of the worst bad guys in Trek lore.

good stuff:

1: Reno
2: Culber
3: Kovich
4: That Vulcan ship
5: Thought they were going to kill Reese. Glad they didn't.
6: Season 4 is reminding me that I miss Lorca. He would have just shrugged and left Murderer Prison Guy before we had to hear his sad sack autobiography, and he wouldn't have bothered piping it in to the bridge, later.
7: Interesting to know the Iconians are still around.

This might have been the worst episode of Discovery, yet, IMO. They have no sense of urgency, no timing, and feel the need to keep multiple concurring plots going when sometimes it's okay to focus.

Been seeing some comments online about how the guest stars are stealing the focus and thunder away from the main characters this season.

IMO there's nothing wrong with having strong guest stars. That just means you have good casting and good scripts which are able to develop viewer investment in the guest characters. Good shows often have good guest stars.

Burnham did have one but it still felt like her monologues.

Captains Log 29456

Book is still deep in pain. Pain I have felt many times in my life. The crew has become a family but even family can not soothe the sadness that comes from the inextricable loss of loved ones we will never see again. It breaks my heart knowing his pain will live with him for as long he lives as it does us all. Hopefully the mission we are able to engage in will at best provide some purpose and distraction to the bigger issue of his state of mind.

I actually think TNG was as good as it was in part because of it's guest stars. Since they didn't have the internal conflict that conflict came from the outside and even though they didn't have the reaccuring great characters like DS9 did they used to had a interesting new character ever week beyond even just Q and Barclay. Admiral Jarok, Captain Jelico, Morarity, Ro Lauren etc.

Could have Marcus be transformed by the way Discovery helped end the Klingon War into a pro-disarmament Fed type that doesn't see the need for starfleet having 7000 ships in 50 classes when only 12 would do. And who needs that many ships when you have one Robau?
