We know that Tig Notaro was unable to be in Canada to shoot scenes for some episodes but with COVID continuing to be a concern and as a breast cancer survivor she might be even more vulnerable to COVID protocols, hence why we haven't seen Jett Reno since last season and she has yet to appear in this year's new episodes.

She's in the next episode.

And I think I'll be referring to Owosekun, Detmer, Bryce, and Rhys as "the alpha-shift bridge crew". As far as I know, they're all proper department heads now, too. They are not just there "to give exposition and shake around". Not to me.

When they actually do more than shake around and give exposition then we'll talk. While the characters might be department heads, the actors are not leads. Their names appear in closing, not opening credits.

I think it's partially related to COVID protocols causing them to limit the number of cast on stage.

I mean, they quite noticeably didn't even use the bridge sets for Episodes 3 and 4.

We'll be back to having a "bridge show" this week though, which means they'll be present again.

We were talking about this on our podcast, too. It seems that Discovery does a lot of what TNG used to do with Geordi when he'd come to the bridge while still being able to maintain an engineering console.

If there's a bridge scene where a certain character needs to be present, the show will just give them a station, but, they aren't normally present there.

I said this a while back, but, their roles honestly aren't much different than Takei's, Nichols', and Keonig's were on the series. We may forget because they were brought back for the films, but on the series, itself, they had very little to do other than just carry out Kirk's orders or give him a status report on what's going on. The action and heaviest dialogue was given to Shatner and Nimoy in all the bridge scenes.

I’ve seen people mention multiple times that they don’t know the Discovery bridge crew’s first names, ‪and act as though it’s an issue unique to Discovery. And every single time I’ve encountered that ‪‪I think about how Sulu and Uhura didn’t have their first names mentioned in the entirety of TOS and TAS.

Exactly this. As much as I would love to learn about the various crewmembers that is simply not the way the story is presented. It is far more like TOS than DS9.

They've been referred to as "Commanders" this season, so I'm assuming that several of them were promoted...

Their ranks are hard to make out on their Tricom badges, but they’re also given in the end credits.

The majority of the main bridge crew are now Lt. Commanders following promotions at the end of Season 3.

The only crew members confirmed with the rank of full fledged Commander are Dr. Pollard, Reno, and Stamets.

Culber, Detmer, Owosekun, Rhys, Bryce and Nilsson are all Lieutenant Commanders.

Linus is a Lieutenant Jr. Grade (as is the newly transferred Tilly), Bryce’s new occasional fill-in, Christopher, is a Lieutenant, and Adira of course, is an Ensign.

Edited to include Commander Jett Reno
