Sometimes it almost feels like as if people forgot that at this point in Deep Space Nine (after 46 episodes, which would bring us right up to the end of Season 2), we still considered Rom to be a greedy idiot with no redeeming qualities, we still thought Indentant Kira was not just a cartoonishly depraved nymphomaniac with a taste for anything that moves but an actual dark, twisted, power-hungry take on our Major, we didn't know Joran Dax existed (nor have we ever heard about Lela, Audrid or Torias), we still believed the Vorta had psychokinetic powers and didn't know the Founders were Odo's people... and so on.

It's almost as if some people tried to compare what we've learned about the supporting casts and secondary characters of previous series during their entire run including the movies to what we know about the Disco crew after less than 50 episodes.

Largely because they are. And part of that comes down to very little investment (if not outright hatred of) the main characters, for whatever reason. Michael is treated as a poor showing of a captain, yet wasn't taken seriously when she wasn't a captain. Saru and Stamets both get mixed opinions, depending on the episode. So, the focus turns to the secondary and tertiary characters, who are expected to grow a full show's worth development in less than half the time.

I get wanting to try and invest in characters and we all have secondary characters we love and want to see more of (I'm a Giotto man, myself). But, that's not how Trek has always done it, and that is not the primary focus of Discovery.

Prestige TV shows work a bit different, in that we get fewer episodes, and those episodes are supposed to impact more than the original 25-35 episode runs of broadcast TV in the past.

46 episodes of DS9 is two seasons. 46 episodes of Discovery is 4 seasons.

I don’t get the desire for more from the bridge crew when there are so many characters already. Burnham, Tilly, Saru, Culber and Stamets, Adira and Gray, Book, Admiral and Prez, Burnham’s mom, Reno is coming back. That’s enough for me. Sometimes day players are just day players.

People seem to think that the bridge crew have to be main characters because that's how TNG/VOY/ENT did it. Frankly, those shows and the characters were ill-served by that concept.

Because they don't like any of the listed characters.

I used to want more bridge crew but I changed my mind after Detmer's mini PTSD arc last season. Nothing wrong with that arc per se but I would much rather see a Book/Culber therapy session instead. I really just want to see more of the better actors which are pretty much the people you mentioned (plus the Vulcan prez). So yeah, I'm fine with no bridge crew.
