This sounds like a terrible way to watch a show.

I’m hoping it gets better. I realize others enjoy it, but for me it just isn’t that good. The opening scene, for example, started with some promise but eventually dwindled to silliness. I feel that’s indicative of the entire series thus far.

Like I said, I’m going to continue watching because I’m a fan of the franchise and I’m too nerdy/ocd not to watch *everything*. But I doubt I’ll rewatch it once it’s finished like I do with every other series.

I was kind of disappointed that after 1200 years of starship design, the consoles still explode. At least the ceiling wasn't filled with rocks.

It's crazy. Those ships are death traps. A nuclear reactor behind every console, fireworks in every cabinet and drawer, no seatbelts. The list goes on.

It started a bit slow and silly, but did pick up in the second-half. I thought the ultimate reason for the Federation President's presence was a nice twist (OMG they got a plot twist right!) Burnham is definitely facing a situation where not everyone will likely be saved (indeed many have likely died already), and she can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I hope this theme is explored and they don't cop out at the end with some sort of narrative reset button where all is restored (but then again this is Star Trek).

I still think the best part of the episode was them revealing Archer spacedock and them using Archer's theme as well. Love when they reference Enterprise material.
There have been several musical callbacks to eras past in the last couple seasons of Star Trek, and I've loved every one of them. Aside from Archers theme, we have heard the Romulan theme from TOS episode Balance of Terror when they introduced the Romulans on Picard, and they used the Voyager theme a couple times when Seven appeared. Also, Lower Decks flat out used the Next Generation theme when Riker swooped in to the rescue in the first season finale.

That was pretty good!

Glad to see Admiral Vance back. The opening reminded me of Pine’s Kirk opening…

And we’ve got a mystery, which I love.

Yeah the opening felt like a combination of Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond's opening.

I've had some time to think about it, and I think the fourth season is going to be the most straight-forward season of DSC. The second season, you can see where they shifted showrunners even if you didn't know. The third season was 10 episodes of set-up and three episodes of rush.

With the fourth season, we don't need to set-up the 32nd Century and there's no change in showrunners. So this season can just focus on the main plot of the season and spend all 13 episodes doing it... so this might have the chance of being the best season.

But then why did they use a tribble-squeal sound effect, and why was it so hairy?

I just assumed that this was some new variety of tribble that was larger and no longer bred out of control that someone on the crew was keeping as a pet.

Yeah I assumed it was a tribble. Maybe the Federation discovered they were sentient. If that was a horta, they goofed on the sound and visual effects. Has anyone involved with Discovery confirmed it was a horta?
