”The Cage” was not previously on Star Trek. Only The Menagerie.

Canon is now self contradictory.

There's a meme which goes something like: why is the majority so hell-bent on trying to stay the majority? Could it be we don't treat minorities well here?

The moment anyone trots out SJW and they don't mean single Jewish woman, I'm skipping off to other, greener pastures.

Life's too short to argue with idiots.
I hate to say I've become like this, too. Oh, it's the smartest decision, but it's grating to know that the person you refuse to engage (because they are so deep in it they're not coming out without a 20 man team and two tow motors) will just use it to show your position is empty and you have nothing. Perception is everything, and it's easy to lead people by the nose that way.

That reference makes me want to drink some Guinness.

Can't stand Guinness! At least what's served here in America. In watching a video on YouTube a young Irish woman said that many Irish don't care for American Guinness and that for some unknown reason it is far more bitter. I do enjoy Guinness Blonde Ale.

Section 31 killed them I assume.

Why? There would be no need. All they need do is claim Spock did and manufacture a few bogus reports.

Stamnets did come off as really creepy in this episode with that smile.
The actor could probably play a good serial killer.

Not so much creepy as desperate. By far the superior written storyline in this episode. To lose your love and then have them resurrected only to lose them again. That's heartbreaking. Not going to argue "creepy" versus "desperate." Definitely a case where the "B" story worked better than the "A."

To circle back to the trauma/argument for just a moment (sorry if this is dead horse beating) -- I can go along with it because of how young Spock is here. Five? ...

I don't buy it. I accept it because that is how they chose to write it, but it is a weak "meh' sort of happening. I agree with a previous contributor here who pointed out that part of the problem was that, after a seven episode build up, it was a letdown. It did not live up to the soap opera quality coyness and hype.

For the first time in the series run, I'm interested in what happens next week. They did a far better job with the Talos IV stuff than I thought they were capable of. Though all the running stories were actually interesting in their own right.

Agreed. Despite my estimation of the Spock-Burnham conflict folks forget I gave the episode a "9" (out of 10) rating. With only 6 episodes left things are starting to get resolved.

I think they've introduced the multiple timelines with Burnham to give themselves and fans some wiggle room on how this all fits together.

That could be. Certainly a popular theory online as it has been their 21st century work around - kind of beating it to death if that does happen as they did it on Enterprise and the Kelvin movies.

But, unlike most, I found "The Cage" opening jarring and would've rather had them reshoot some scenes with the current actors.

I can understand your point. I disagree though primarily on the grounds I am an old codger who thought it "groovy" to see the original footage. But yeah, see actors play Pike and Spock in the recap to then go to a different Pike and Spock in both tone and appearance could be jarring.

In TAS Shikahr had trees in the surrounding hills. Maybe they lived in the 'burbs.

I figure even in the desert one would live where there was a source of water nearby. Having trees to provide shade and a wind break would be only logical as well.

Also, I just really like the way it looks.

Not just the Actors, the Director and Producers also have to be cleared.

Union contractual requirements are probably the biggest reason why CBS doesn't use more stuff from past Treks.
It costs a lot of money and man hours to do that stuff.

Also, don't forget what happened with the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribulations." They tried to get away without paying the TOS actors who appeared in it. Shatner went to war and ended up getting his standard fee at the time (as did Nimoy … don't about the others). Then again that was Paramount business affairs and not CBS.

I like her just fine—well ahead of half of the rest of Trek casts on TV. As a lead I like her better than Brooks or Mulgrew. As ever, YMMV.

Avery Brooks is a deeply weird man who makes some strange acting choices, but the guy can command a scene like few others. SMG isn't even in close in terms of charisma.

Mulgrew, I'm not sure about.

Vulcan needs plants - no plants, no air. It's actually a good thing they've finally decided to show some foliage (and rain).

yes, there are a few areas but not anywhere near Toronto. But as noted, where is Vulcan going to get its oxygen if there are no plants? If you want Star Trek to be even remotely realistic in any way at all, there being the odd forest on Vulcan cannot be impossible.
I actually wasn't bothered by the forest, I just thought it was a funny example of the difference between filming in Canada and filming in California.
Just because we haven't seen trees on Vulcan before doesn't mean there can't be any. I live in a desert and there are still trees here and there.

This is a bit old, but seems appropos to what your describing..

It's also the 23rd century. Vulcan probably has weather control figured out and artificial/cloned trees wherever are not a problem. Sarek is Vulcan royalty or near-royalty, so he might have a huge garden of exotic Earth trees to make Amanda feel at home or something, and Burnham just never made it off of the vast Sarek estate (which is in ShiKahr Province if not the city of ShiKahr itself).

Sarek does need to work on pest control, though.

It was broadcast in its entirety on TV in the late 80s I believe. Technically, you could say it fulfills what 'canon' is.
It's also on the DVDs, Blu-Rays and online streaming services (Netflix and CBS All Access).

”The Cage” was not previously on Star Trek. Only The Menagerie.

Canon is now self contradictory.

The events they showed in the previously on took place before DSC, and both episodes also aired before DSC.

So it is still 'previously on'.

One of the things I loved about the novel "Sarek" was when he and Amanda returned to Vulcan, they brought earth plants that would grow in the heat, so she could have her garden. It kind of feels like that in this episode.

Star Trek ran from 1966-69. “The Cage” was not broadcast.

Yes it was made available in many formats but no, it was not on “Star Trek” per se. Or are we using the Red Angel to redo history?

Had they said “Previously” that would be fine. But “...on Star Trek”?
