It was never stated outright, but we know it's true because of the fact that he has a commissioned Starfleet rank (Lieutenant in Season 1 and Lieutenant Commander currently)

People mistakenly took his behavior and his attitude towards Lorca and being assigned to the Discovery to mean that he was a civilian or NCO who got 'conscripted' into joining Starfleet's war effort, but that was never actually the case.

I mean, this could be, but it's absolutely not a sure thing. The actual dialogue can be interpreted as Stamets being or not being part of Starfleet. He says that "we were happy in our lab, then your war started, and Starfleet co-opted our research. They split us up, put us in charge of different teams, so we could work twice as fast."

In the comics, he's definitely not part of Starfleet and, if I recall, those comics have informed the actors' perception of the roles. Not canon, but certainly confirmation that an alternative interpretation is possible.

Indeed. Claude Debussy's "Arabesque No. 1" is more than 120 years old, and I listen to it several times a week. It is, easily, one of my favorite works, and it too has stood the test of time.
I listen to this one, i really like it a lot...

Seriously though dudes. I'd probably recognize Space Oddity if they just played it, but it's not a song I know the words to by heart by any means. And I'm not even all that young (I'm 39 - clearly not a millennial). It's just not a song I heard that much growing up. On the other hand, if they picked say something by The Smiths, I'd pick up on it right away, but I'm sure a lot of you wouldn't pick up on it (though honestly Big Mouth Strikes Again is the perfect song for Tilly).

Yup, you're right about The Smiths. I'm also 39 but I never heard them before. I just looked them up on YouTube. The Smiths sound up my ally. So now I have a "new" band to discover. Thanks!

Seems only fair then that I share my favorite song with people who may not know it:

No I wrote I did not accept that Tilly would have a 300 year old song as her favourite song (whether it was David Bowie or Chuck Berry is irrelevant)

My original post
'How many present day 20 something year old humans have a 300 year old song as their favourite? That scene was too corny'

See above

I'm an older millennial just past your age bracket, but depending on the mood this is my favorite song.

that, or strangely one of many songs from David Bowie. All made before I was born.

It made the Space Oddity scene even more emotional to me.

Interview on Startrek.com
Anthony, how did you enjoy the Star Trek: Discovery Annual, the IDW comic book that filled in some of the details about how Stamets and Culber met, and set up Stamets’ involvement with the mycelial network?

RAPP: It absolutely felt to me authentic to what I understood (about) how we met or the nature of how our relationship built and also how I came to Starfleet. I didn't know all the facts of it, but it felt very true to what it seemed like it was.

CRUZ: I use it, and (addressing Rapp) I know you use it, to help us flesh out who these people. I loved it, I really did, and I thought they did a spectacular job.

RAPP: It was really cool.

Until there's direct contradiction, I'm gonna defer to the Star Trek Annual. It was really good.

It was another good week for alien representation on the ship. There were three different aliens shown in the conference room (Saru, Linus, Nahn. Did I miss any?), all with speaking parts.

So looking at that map that showed Spock’s route compared to Star Charts, he cut clear across the thinnest part of the Klingon empire. You can also see some Klingon system names.

They do have one, the character just hasn't played a direct role in any episodes so far. There are many science officers because, uh, Disco is a science ship...

but Stamets should have been the chief engineer who was working on a revolutionary means of propulsion. Nothing wrong with that, nothing that wouldn't make sense in the context of an ST show.

The show and its cast is very poorly thought out. It's good to have different people with different jobs and points of view and skillsets on a show so they can work together and bring something to the table.

They make Stamet's expertise far too narrow. Assuming that the spore drive won't last forever on the show, what's next for him? There was no reason he couldn't be a spore expert and the ship's chief engineer to give him more options down the line.

And also because, it's Star Trek, we have always had a chief engineer (except when we didn't - TNG S1 - and that was fucking weird). It's part of the lore and it fits logically with having a ship-based show.

We also have glorified extras as bridge officers in roles that would also have been filled by major characters/series regulars on any other show. Instead, the show has an extremely tiny core cast and focuses way too much on one character. Discovery's crew hasn't gelled and it makes it feel less of an actual, lived-in place with real people.

I loved this episode! I loved the reason behind the Enterprise not having holographic communication - Anson Mount's Captain Pike is reminded of ghosts

I was actually kind of shocked at the end. I thought Tilly was the one with fake Stamets and Reno... not the other way around! The universal translator malfunction was cool and I'm honestly surprised it took almost fifty three years for Star Trek to do a UT malfunction.

Also, Jett Reno is officially one of my favorite characters in Star Trek. She reminds me of Scruffy from Futurama having a love child with Jane Lynch. If she doesn't become a recurring character on DISCO, then I'd love to see her get her own show.

How can Spock be beating them? He's in a Shuttle. They probably have warp 3 as their max. Hell, Shuttles aren't even supposed to have warp drive at this time.
