Yes, an example we should see more often, this alien reference, made up for the plot music did not cause any distraction to the story, did it stop the audience from identifying with the moment? I doubt it
Your mileage clearly varies. I found it annoying af

Two 23rd century human males in love learned to like the same alien music, audience cannot relate to scene because
1. They thought the show was set in 2056 not 2256
or
2. They cannot relate to two men in love
or
3. They cannot understand the concept that alien music would exist in the Star Trek universe
or
4. A N other

In "Real Life(VOY)" The Doctor's holographic son listened to Klingon music that wasn't opera. It sounded like a version of Klingon rock music. Now admittedly it was a fictional holodeck family but the EMH doubtless based his offspring's musical tastes off of known musical styles in Voyager's cultural database that were in existence at the time the ship was lost in the Delta Quadrant.

I loved the idea that rebellious Federation teens would embrace Klingon music to seem more bad-ass. That was a neat touch that felt very believable.

The Opera Music they played didn't sound alien at all. I linked it last page.

The audience could not relate to that scene at all!
Nah real bad ass kids like the Beastie boys (hello young Kelvin James Kirk)

Pretty decent episode all around.

Was initially thinking 8 and settled on 9

Pro:
  • It was nice to get back to a largely self contained primary story about space exploration/first contact.
  • I liked the development for Saru (I got a bit of an ominous sense from his discussion of feeling 'power'; maybe it was just me)
  • I liked the dynamic between Reno and Stamets - Reno's "yeah, whatever man" attitude is particularly amusing.
  • Tilly was actually not annoying in this episode - i chalk it up to her taking a sort of back seat to the Reno and Stamets.
  • Number one (more please)
Cons:
  • Not really anything I can think of outside my usual gripe about SMG's Burnham character but the story and the work of everyone else in the cast really sort of diminished her penchant to take me out of the moment.
Random Stuff:
  • I see that the favorite song thing seems to have really taken on a life of it's own here...I just don't get why it's such a big deal or soooo unrealistic that it could be that. For all we know in her time time there's been a revival of 70's era music or something...who cares?
  • I would think it a bit of a stretch to think that the sum total knowledge of such a long lived being would be completely transferred into the ship's database without running out of storage space but who knows? I suppose it could be compressed or encoded in some super efficient way that lives up to the need to 'study it for centuries'

I don't know and I don't care, it exists in the Star Trek universe
Good for you, that things are so easily satisfied by a simple reference rather than making the music connect with the audience on an emotional level, though I guess one could call it lazy writing since it's just a brief mention. I mean, talk is cheap. Cross the 't's and dot the 'i's and things are cool regardless of whether other people connect with them or not.

nope, I knew it was 2256
2. They cannot relate to two men in love
nope, been there myself numerous times. nice try, though
or
3. They cannot understand the concept that alien music would exist in the Star Trek universe
nope. I'm very fine with Klingon opera and want more diversity in the depiction of alien cultures myself. I agree that alien music would be an enrichment. Alien music that sounds not alien at all however, where's the point in that?

ooooor, maybe the reasons I gave were the reasons I had

Actually it costs 100 credits
