I'm suspecting that Reno will be the chief engineer.
speaking of season 2 characters that might get promoted...Linus! Do we know his role on the ship? IIRC he was part of the bridge crew last episode, but I can't remember on which station
He wears Silver so he's a scientist of some sort.
Would Tig Notaro be up for a regular gig, though? I like the character but assumed it was stunt casting for the season. That said, maybe if they are going the warp drive propulsion route more permanently for Discovery from S3 onwards, Reno might be a good replacement for Stamets (in terms of potential story prominence and tone). Nahn appears to be more of a blank slate. Which might reflect her minor status and there are no plans to expand the role.
I really like Linus. In fact, he interests me more than Airiam at the moment.
Looking back it's kinda weird that Nhan got re-introduced in this episode only to have nothing more to do. I think she had a line or two in the UT malfunction scene, but other than that I don't know why they brought her back from the Enterprise. (Or was she on Discovery all the time since “Brother”?) Someone speculated that she's working for Section 31, which wouldn't surprise me. Could be an explanation for why the writers brought her back.
Yeah, she kinda seemed to pop up out of nowhere in the briefing room/ready room. It was as if she'd been standing there the whole time. Maybe she had, I dunno. As for her being an Engineer, I missed that. Will have to re-watch ep 1 again.
I know when the UT was malfunctioning and she was on the bridge with the other she was being translated into Italian. But that's about it.
I hate the idea that Pike and Nhan (who are obviously not permanent members of the crew - well, at least Pike won't be) have to wear the DSC uniforms.
I mean, I understand why they do - so they don't stick out like a sore thumb - it's just that I like the TOS uniforms better dammit!
That was my thought too but she mentioned the Chief Engineer in this episode so she isn't at the moment - I'm guessing she'd need a promotion to do that anyway and this show has enough commanders... It's possible they are keeping her that little bit more junior to act as an occasional foil for Stamets.
I know what you mean, I do like their new uniforms. But I'm the opposite, I kinda like them wearing the DSC uniforms.
Reno is already a full Commander.
I always thought Stamets was Chief, but obviously from Reno's comment in ep 4 he's not.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this episode pretty much confirmed that the "engineering" set we've been seeing is in fact Discovery's main engineering, didn't it?
Oh I thought she was a lieutenant. I can't see those badges all that well.
Stamets is a mushroom scientist, not an engineer - there was a readable on screen graphic in season 1 which said he was Chief Engineer but the producers have said this was a mistake.
Ah okay, so just a scientist with expertise in mushrooms/spores. It's just that I saw in a fic someone mention him as chief engineer. But obviously as it's a fic things get changed.
According to a recent interview it was originally actually meant to be a Torpedo Room, but was converted to the Spore room after the fact.
From what I've read so far, it's not Main Engineering, but sits directly alongside it.
The large red glowey thing in the background, is apparently supposed to be part of the main engine (WARP?) core though.
It would make sense for it to be connected to engineering and be in close proximety, because I'm sure there are systems that connect engineering and the spore room/drive. Even if they're only minor.
It's not most people just one rather quirky woman.
It's only a passing reference when Pike and co. are beamed aboard. Basically it's said he's arriving with one engineer and one science officer (security is not mentioned). Connolly is clearly the science person, so by default, that makes Nhan the engineer.
I'll have to rewatch the episode, but isn't there a line where it's mentioned that the electrical discharge has cut the spore room off from main engineering?
They call it the warp core.
