What makes you think people are overlooking these things in the other Treks, though? Going back to your example earlier, did those people who complained about the handling of Connelly's death in “Brother” really say they were always fine with how earlier Trek handled it? I mean, it's actually a pretty common criticism of much of the earlier Star Trek shows to say they mishandled the death of minor characters. So why shouldn't people be able to point out the same criticism about Discovery?
When individuals cite other Treks as being better.

He saw the L'Rell nudity scene from Season One.

Hell, they had to replace half the crew after an inadvertent screening of Species in the holodeck that very week. How was Data to know how deadly H.R. Giger-lite imagery was to the 24th Century human mind.

As I said up thread, I was deeply disappointed that in this episode they decided to continue the Trek trope of having a small colony of humans isolated for centuries which still had recognizable black and white people. Everyone should have been multiracial
Who's to sat they weren't?

Anyhow, I think getting good actors, like the guy playing Jacob, is more important that trying to cast everyone as "multiracial".

Fair enough. Again, a lot depends on whether the criticism actually compares it to the earlier shows or not.

If you want to say, "the science in that episode was sloppy," that's a perfectly valid criticism that, yes, doesn't require you to acknowledge every bit of sloppy science in every previous STAR TREK project.

But if you say "DISCO is way more sloppy about science than classic Trek," then you're inviting comparisons and counter-examples.

Then again, if you want to argue that we should hold DISCO to a higher standard than previous Treks . . . well, yeah, that's where things get interesting when it comes to comparisons. It's not a double standard, I admit, if someone admits up front that they're holding DISCO to a higher standard because it's 2019 and TV is more sophisticated these days.

As opposed to insisting that the "STAR TREK never did THAT in the good old days" . . . aside from the seventeen times they did. :)
Very well put, I agree with this 100%. :techman:

As for May, Tilly's dead school acquaintance, I agree that the actresses delivery felt off, but I actually thought this was done on purpose to give a clue about her supernatural nature. I kind of liked her instantly, to be honest, and I hope they'll bring her back.

I didn't particularly like Connely's death because he was a smug douche whose only purpose was to be killed in a jokey way. If he had, despite his initial douchiness, died heroically trying to help Burnham escape the asteroid or something like that, it would have been better. Not a huge deal at all, but I don't think it was handled particularly well.
Someone needs to explain to me how it was funny. Because I did not laugh during his death and I keep seeing this assertion yet don't recognize it in the material at all.

6.
Liked Saru...Liked Pike...
Dislike 'Super Burnham' and the Tilly stuff was cringe inducing...

I doubt the writers thought anyone would roll on the floor laughing, but I, too, got the impression they were playing Connelly's death for smirks. The fact that he died smack in the middle of being a smartass once more is one thing that lets me think they did do it on purpose. Trying to explain how this is funny is like explaining a joke; it just makes it not funny.

I didn't see that as 'jokey'. Connelly was presented as arrogant. His arrogance was what got him killed. It was a lesson. A young adult level lesson in its portrayal, but a lesson nonetheless that overconfidence in dangerous situations leads to bad consequences.

I liked the moment when Tilly runs out of sickbay to go to the bridge and there's the momentary pause where she forgets which direction to go, turns around out of sight of the camera and awkwardly runs in the opposite direction. No comical music, no sound effects, just a silent pause and she runs the other way.

That worked for me. I audibly laughed.

I think they were aiming more for schadenfreude, than actual belly laughs. For me, it was a satisfying fictional scene due to my own personal experiences dealing with serial mansplainers IRL. Even my son enjoyed the moment, because he understood how much of a reckless douche Connolly was being to both Burnham and Pike. It was definitely a lesson in hubris and arrogance. Just like Landry's death was.

YMMV.

That was an ad lib by Frakes and Wiseman.
