I loved the finale. It took me a while to warm up to Discovery, but I can't wait until season 2 (I read that it will be sometime in 2019) I got a little confused as to where the Orion market was and then why it was on Qo'nos. That marketplace is HOT, in more ways than one. I love Tilly. I wish they would let Saru be Captain, but it will be interesting to see who will be Captain. And now we have made contact with the Enterprise (will we see Spock, I wonder what the explanation will be for Spock never mentioning her. I can accept her being his sister. I would rather forget there even is a Sybok. Kirk is Spock's brother as far as I'm concerned)

So bring on season 2 :vulcan:

ATTENTION ALL STARFLEET PERSONELL:
Evil doppelganger on the loose!
A [redacted] from another [redacted] is posing as Captain Philippa Georgiou. While she is free to do whatever wants, because she [redacted][redatcted] when we [redacted] and [redacted], she might want to [redacted] to return to [redacted] where she originally was [redacted] of the [redacted]. Please be cautious

Or perhaps Starfleet discreetly arranged to have her assassinated.

The only part I didn't like was letting MU Georgiou go. There's got to be some real danger that she will attempt to pose as her own counterpart. I can only hope that Starfleet's put out some kind of all-points bulletin so that everyone will know...
This troubled my sense of 'reality' and believability, too. With all her tactical knowledge, skills, vicious ruthlessness, thirst for power, etc., she poses a serious threat to peace and security in the Federation and to our heroes' primary Universe, in general. I don't see her settling down quietly somewhere ("I would have liked to have seen Montana"). I have trouble accepting that the Federation would let her act as Captain of the Discovery, unsupervised/unconstrained in that position, and then give her a 'get out of jail free' card so she can take the next shuttle off Qo'nos to parts (and mischief) unknown. Maybe she'll rescue and thaw out Khan and they will end up running a little bed & breakfast in Vermont!

.... But I really have enjoyed Discovery, overall, and look forward to the next season.

sounds more like the Starfleet I know and love

Then again, given her bad attitude and obvious hatred for Klingons, it's also possible that Georgiou will manage to get HERSELF killed before she ever gets off Qo'nos.

In fact I find this very likely. Either through sheer bumbling on Georgiou's part, or L'Rell will send someone to off her.

The Black Badgers will take care of it.

A bomb to set off the volcanoes, like a bad action movie.

They already introduced the fact that Lorca had some Dark Matter. One of the things Physicists feel comprises the missing Dark Matter in out universe is Strange Matter.

Just google "strange matter apocalypse".

It's topic that real physicists talk about.

They had real science in their hands, but, Noooo they went with the hydro bomb setting off volcanos. Were they afraid they would inspire some 13 year old to destroy the Earth?

Georgiou's death warrant is easy enough if Starfleet DOES go that route - their cover story was that she turned up as a Klingon POW. Ash said he was the prototype for Klingon/human infiltrators - Starfleet has now identified Georgiou as one such and, surprise, she was last sighted on the Klingon homeworld.

Seriously though, this will be forgotten until twenty years from now in The Wrath of Georgiou. Because if Kirk can get away with letting a known genocidal maniac go free, Burnham can. Phillipa at least isn't genetically enhanced (not that Yeoh needs it, yowza).

In fairness though if you DID find a way to release the mantle into the atmosphere, something like the Permian Great Dying would be triggered as it was in Siberia. I think they may have been going for a Greg Bear "Forge of God" type destruction sequence but did not want to directly copy him for obvious reasons (plus MGM has the films rights)

How long to real life COs remain in command of a ship/base/unit?
Depends. In the USAF, officers in general remain at a unit around two years or so; longer if it's Stateside. Now, I've seen commanders last four years in Alaska, but that's technically what we call "OCONUS" (overseas continental US) and is closer to a straight-up overseas tour than anything else. Rule of thumb: officers last two to three years.

That having been said, that's the AF. Since Starfleet's heritage is naval, it might be apples and oranges.

Based on my exprience, all soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, including their CO's, generally last anywhere between 2 to 5 years per assignment and then rotate elsewhere. The official reason for this is to give the soldiers a breadth of experience and skills in as many different environments and theaters of operation in preparation for when they muster out and join the civilian workforce. I was told once, by a Master Sergeant, that the real reason for this is to prevent a long-standing cadre of soldiers to become loyal to a base commander rather than exclusively to the Commander-in-Chief, lest said CO decides he doesn't like what the President is doing for any particular reason, political or otherwise, and proceeds to stage an armed insurrection with a bunch of loyalists. Keep everyone moving around in all different directions for their entire career and it doesn't give anyone time to put down roots and form large groups with strong - and potentially dangerous - opinions. Makes sense from a certain POV, I guess. Pain in the ass, though, when you have to break in a new GPOC every couple of years. Horrible for preserving the institutional memory at the administrative level for a program.

We got a different story for the officer corps in the AF. In order to promote, they expected an officer to serve at each echelon level for a tour (if not two). That's flight, squadron, group, a purple tour (joint service), and wing. Add that up and, from a personnelist's perspective, that limits the amount of time an officer can serve before they need to shuffle off to do their next stint. Hence, two to three years.

On the enlisted side, it varies considerably. In my twenty-two years, I went to one base twice for a total of thirteen years between the two stints. Stateside tours were, technically, indefinite. If you were married, you had to spend at least three years at the base but that was the bottom threshold. Like I said, I was in one place for a heckuva lot longer... Overseas enlisted tours, though, were set in stone unless you got an extension or what we called an in-place consecutive overseas tour. So, 18 months if you were single, two years if it was a semi-remote (irrespective of marriage status), three years if you were married, and four years in some select areas (like Alaska).

This screencap effectively sums up the show....

The Enterprise probably hailed Discovery because they lack the new v57.04.2342 hotfix for StarfleetOS that fixes a glitch about every instance of the word 'Simulation' being misspelled and it's causing problems as it's driving Spock crazy. Unfortunately, Discovery couldn't download the hotfix either as it only came out after they left the Sol system and went to warp.

It's not the first time it happened. The v56.06.1853 update reversed the direction of the impulse engines because of a semicolon that was accidentally inserted in a line.
