Entertaining episode. Not as good as last week but I do rub my hands in anticipation of next week.

That is a really weird design. It's so in-the-dark, yet full of lights, I'm having a hard time discerning what it's supposed to look like. Seems almost anime to me.
It reminds me a bit of the Vengeance from Into Darkness, triangular hole in the saucer and the bridge is like a palace/power station.
 
Yeah I can see that. Whatever it is, I hope Eaglemoss makes a model of it :D! But yes, definitely not the Defiant. I'm kind of glad for this - the showrunners seem to be keeping its true form intentionally vague.

The Defiant could be accompanying the Palace ship. Also, I wonder what are the origins of the latter. Could it be a repurposed Klingon sarcophagus ship? Or is it a Starfleet design (think really, really big Vengence-like ship).
 
Tyler's last-second rescue by the Discovery was a bit of a surprise at first. For a moment I thought Burnham had gone full-scale MU on him and wanted him dead for betraying her. I'm glad he gets to survive and face the consequences of both what he did and L'Rell's surgery, brainwashing and sleeper agent programming.

My question is can they really hold Tyler responsible...that's really not Tyler. And the part that IS Tyler likely isn't responsible for the killing. Negligence for withholding his condition, yes, but I'd say it was Voq who killed Culber, etc.
 
That's not a problem. It can be exported to some format like fbx, 3ds or obj which almost every 3D program can import.

That's not a one-and-done process, though. 3DS and OBJ are old formats that have plenty of drawbacks unless all you need is geometry (3DS is size-limited, and OBJ only supports one UV map per file, and never mind what a mess they make of surfacing data). FBX is better, but can still give you a bunch of flipped polygons, misassigned surfaces, and other bullshit when working with complex files (check out the registry on this shot of the Enterprise-E, which was a quick and dirty conversion from C4D to Lightwave via FBX. All I did was reapply the textures and throw on a couple of spotlights. If and when I get around to doing it properly, I'm probably going to have to split the model to pieces, go over each bit by hand, and put it back together again).

Even if the model did convert clean, then we've got the thirteen-year gap in technology and practices. A 2005 model would've been built in Lightwave 8, so that means no linear color correction (unless they did it by hand, and I don't think the Good News of LCS had spread that widely by that point,) and no physically-based render model. So the surfacing and light rig will be garbage and have to be reapplied and tweaked at best, and the texture maps completely repainted at worst. Never mind whatever oddball practices the DSC VFX team has for their pipeline. Maybe they render window lights and running lights separately. Maybe they get that weird heavy-metal-album-cover look by having separate models for diffuse and specular lights. But a new model would be built with their exact needs in mind, and a conversion would have to be altered to work for them.

And 3D VFX isn't the only thing that's advanced in the past decade. With fan-scholership and the Smithsonian restoration, any artist today could build a perfect model of the TOS Enterprise that'd be more accurate than the Defiant or the TOS-R models, and that's with publicly available information. I'm pretty sure the CBS archive has some really detailed stuff.

In any case, it's not a very complicated group of shapes, and with the difficulties of making a conversion, I don't see a good reason to not build a new model from scratch.

By the by, now that I'm thinking in CG mode, I just want to remark on how frustrating I find it that a) the Shenzhou still doesn't have window-boxes and, b) they carved out a line of Discovery-style rabbit-tooth windows between decks (and between sets of blank white windows) to match the set for the Captain's Quarters. There had to have been a better way.
 
I noticed that Imperial lingerie is a lot more form fitting than standard Starfleet issue sack cloth singlets + briefs from the Prime Universe.

At least she slept in something other than a uniform. Can't tell you how many times on various Trek episodes where I rolled my eyes when people got out of their bunks in full uniform.

I'm assuming Detmer ratted out Burnham to the Empress.
 
On another note, Lorca had a wry glint in his eye when the Emperor appeared. More proof that he might belong in this universe?

Yes, that was my thought as well.

But if the Terran Empire hates aliens, how could Spock rise to his position?

Anyway, a good, though a very predictable, episode. 8/10.
