I like Lorca pretending to be a Scottish Engineer. I am guessing that was a nod to Scotty. Frakes did a great job with the episode.

What's interesting to me is that the Terran Empire of the Mirror Universe and the Starfleet of the Discovery universe aren't too far removed from each other. One admits to being evil and is proud of it, the other just thinks they are egalitarian but are willing to compromise their core principles and look the other way so they can win a war.

What's the in-universe record so far? We know the Hathaway was 80 years old when she was decommissioned and turned into a training vessel for war games. The Bozeman automatically became 90 years older than she already was the moment she exited the temporal rift in the Typhon Sector and entered the 24th century.

USS Republic may have been over a century old during the Dominion War, but she was said to be just an old training ship that probably didn't leave the Sol System since the 2320s.

It’s correct for the most part. The other aliens in the Empire aren’t treated well. Like second class citizens.

Spock might have a waver being half-human. Or the Vulcans have been in the Empire so long that they are accepted as citizens of the Empire.
Spock was able to use his operatives being Vulcan as a viable threat to Mr. Sulu.

You need to rewatch the episode if you think there's any way what was said can be interpreted as "treated as second class citizens".

A six. Nearly a five. Michael actually shone in this. Lorca was ok. Tilly is like a donkey kong DICK. Worst character in any Star Trek. Tyler. Where to begin? I really believe the mindset of Starfleet in Discovery represents idiots. Tyler was clearly a mess previous episode but he just blithely goes on missions this episode, snaps necks, chats with a creepy ex-girlfriend Klingon, and gets to go on more missions and I think he even fucks Michael. He's a loser. So typical of Discovery that a decent character, Culbert is killed.

I did however kind of like, I mean 'like' Lorca.

The only way to make any of the MU episodes work in any way logically is to assume we travel to a slightly different quantum reality each time. Infinite possibilities - there will be lots of Terran Empires, and lots of them got a Defiant from a universe similar to ours. Otherwise, we just accept the MU is fun, not sensible, and roll with it. As Lorca and Burnham hang a lantern on, the fact that in this totally different universe all the same people end up on nearly identical ships is itself ludicrous. Any other issues pale in comparison.

9/10 dominatrix tilly's for me. The episode was great but loses points for falling into the 'kill your gays trope'. Culber's death was too much. Everything else was amazing. Honorable mention to the glimpse we got of the updated Constitution Class!

Rating this episode is a struggle for me. There were aspects that I thought were great. The story was fun and engaging, the whole sequence with Captain Tilly and Engineer Scotty was brilliant, the costuming is spot on, loved seeing the Shenzhou again (although disappointed not to see Georgiou - yet.), and the update of MU ideas like the Agony Booth was really well done.

However, nearly everything that involved Tyler was a big minus point for me. The only explanation for why he's not confined to quarters is MirrorLorca sees his own PTSD in him and relates. The brig scene was annoying in that nobody is ever on duty in there! And then the sickbay scene, well. Firstly, they didn't notice massive scarring from bone crushing on his 'thorough medical' the first time? And secondly, and most importantly, the Bury Your Gays trope on Star Trek, really? For Trek's first gay couple? In their first season? Suitably punished the gay couple for their sins, let's move on to the nice straight sex scene. Ugh.

Overall, I'm going with 5. Fun elements, disappointing elements, cancelling each other out somewhat to a mid table rating.

I'm not complaining about the continuity of the MU, but I just wanted to mention that throughout all of the series there's only been one MU, The MU that we saw in TOS, DS9, and ENT was the exact same MU. Since the producers claim that the Discovery universe is the same prime universe that we saw in all of the other series, logic dictates that the MU in Discovery is the same MU from all of the other series. Just sayin'.

I always thought it was pretty obvious that it was always the same MU.

I felt it was the third best episode of the season behind the time loop episode and the mid-season final. Not sure I saw it as scary as others are making it. Seemed like some good camp mixed in with some legit drama which reminds of the later mirror universe ep's of DS9 but the first mirror universe story I still felt like the most grounded look at the universe. Tilly talking over speakers and Lorca doing a Scotish accent was the highlight along with Burnham killing the guy in the elevator and seeing her reaction.

I also saw all the twists coming because we fans are just to smart to be fooled so easily. I even saw Culber dying once he started to figure out the truth and foolishly told him when Tyler was clearly going crazy on the inside. I hope the bring the character back via his mirror universe double but not sure if I want them to be a couple at least right away. I actually prefer them to actually take this time to expand the Culber character so he is more than just Stamets love interest. Has he done anything that wasn't related to Stamet's character arc up until this episode were we see him confront Tyler? The actors got the chemistry but the Culber characters needs a little more depth.

As for the Emperor I know we are all predicting Georgiou but I would like to think the shows writers are smart enough to know we are smart enough to expect that twist and then use that expectation against us. As for real Emperor I was thinking one of Burnhams human parents or Mudd or even Lorca from the mirror universe. What if he was actually successful in his attempt to overtake the thrown and has been keeping it secret or sending out false information for some kind of plan, no doubt connected to destroy the rebels. Georgiou could be mirror Lorca's lover/wife and captain of the Defiant. Even without that twist I could still see her as the Defiant captain which makes sense because in theory that would most likely be the most powerful ship in the empire.
