Multiple times IRL I've been talking Discovery up to people, but then I throw in some qualifier like "of course, I would be watching a Star Trek show no matter what -- the only thing that could possibly get me to turn it off is if they do a Kill Your Gays story with the gay couple."

So, yeah, all sorts of fun things about this episode, but all I see is the gay man's neck getting snapped for A. shock value and B. to set up hetero sex for the leads.

If he's brought back to life next week... well, this will probably still feel a bit distasteful, but I could feel fine about it.

If that's a real death... shame on the writers, it's a complete and total betrayal of everything they've talked about wanting to do with these characters.

A slow build-up that gradually kept turning up the heat until it went full-boil. Some stuff I saw coming, other stuff I didn't.

Probably the best Mirror Universe story since DS9's "Crossover" back in its second season or DC Comics' eight-part "New Frontier" in 1984-1985.

Tyler is Voq, but clearly doesn't want to be. This is where the real drama begins. The battle of wills between L'Rell and her former lover. I wouldn't be surprised if he dies, is killed off or leaves Starfleet by the end of the season as a result of his struggles with his submerged identity and past. The Klingons succeeded in planting a sleeper agent aboard Discovery but they probably won't get what they wanted from the operation.

Wow, they did it again and upped their game.

A 10 from me, that was absolutely amazing. From Captains Killy and Burnham, to Lorca in an agonizer (poor guy, it seems pretty much every time he encounters aliens, they wind up torturing him), to the Culber shocker (I soooo hope that he somehow survived! It broke my heart to see it.)

I fully agree with many of the preceding posters. This is the first time that the Mirror Universe has been shown to be thoroughly terrifying. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time that any of our regulars was in the presence of their Terran counterparts. Tilly was awesome. And we finally see Burnham in a Captain's chair, just completely not how we expected to see it happen. It was horrifying to see her Terran officers saluting at the end.

We see that the Voq / Ash fan-theory was absolutely correct, but the fact that now they are in the MU throws some more potential twists. Any "Klingon" slip ups that might occur while Ash is masquerading as a Terran can now be explained away by him stating that he was just acting like a Terran. As he wrestles with his dual identity, there is also the intriguing possibility that seeing a Terran version of what he wants to do to the Prime Universe Klingon Empire might alternatively inspire or horrify him.

I am really looking forward to more!!

That was dismaying, I agree. I certainly hope Culber isn't gone. Wilson Cruz has been listed as "guest starring," which I never noticed before (but went back and looked and sure enough that is his billing), so he may be gone for good. :(

Culber aside, I'm still buzzing over Discovery being back. Nothing else scratched the itch I've had since November! As much as I love Tilly, I think I love Captain Killy even more (as much as I prefer redheads, her blonde hair fit her wonderfully). Once again, Tilly brings the humor!

But that wasn't my biggest laugh, Lorca improvising a Scottish Engineer was hilarious!

I'm glad they are moving forward with the Tyler sub-plot. There's still a chance of a twist, but it seems like he'll attribute anything in the Mirror Universe to the stress of being a Terran. This might be enough to get him back to "our" universe and then, all bets are off!

Maybe they'll replace him with his mirror counterpart, and then he'll be short-tempered and rude like Bones.
As long as he loves Stamets, I can live with that.

Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten about Lorca's accent! I started rolling when he did that.

Fear not. From the actor himself...

"Yes. We will see Dr. Culber again. This is an epic love story. Yes. You will be experiencing highs and lows, triumphs and disappoints as you would in any relationship. And what we’re doing is inviting you to go on the journey of this relationship and the roller coaster ride that it is. And this is just one chapter in their story. And where we’re going to take you, I think, is incredibly exciting. And this had to happen in order for us to go there.

So, you know, what we’re all doing, what we’re doing now is asking the audience to trust us. This is not a bury your gays, kill your gays trope storyline. This is a chapter in this relationship and even Paul and Hugh have no idea what’s about to go down. And, you know, I give people permission to be sad on Sunday, I think that’s appropriate. I think we will all go through some stages of grief, and I think that’s okay. I think that’s why we make TV, you know? We take you on this trip. And this is part of it."
