Knowing CBS I'd never say it's out of the realm of possibility. Knowing you you'd love it.
What do you have against ABBA?:scream:

(actually, they were the only non-"country AND western" music I ever got to hear in the house as a kid, so there is a strong nostalgia factor there for me)

I thought it was good. Story is starting to take shape. Takes time to tell a good story. We are getting character stories now.

It was always stupid that Trek characters knew nothing of culture after about 1930. I understand they didn't want to date the show with contemporary references, which was probably a good idea at the time. But it got a little silly when everyone on TNG listened only to classical music and read 19th century fiction.

Voyager creeped forward to the fifties with its references, but even Enterprise's movie night always seemed to be a black and white film. Always a Paramount film for some reason. ;)

The Beatles are even older than Star Trek, so it's a long overdue reference! Maybe Michael and Tilly will break out their Abba LPs next week?

I've always suspected that theyquietly set the hard date of references to the 30's not just for avoiding modern references that would date the shows, but more importantly for legal reasons. At least for TNG forward they wanted to insure they had no hidden copyright bombs waiting to go off as the show moved to newer media. So they only used stuff that was bound by older Copyright laws and standards. The big issue probably being any more modern music. Remember all the problems shows like WPRK had when they tried to bring them to home media? A Beatles song to this day would tie each re-release of an episode up in a legal and royalties web. Better to just go old school and avoid it.

I love them. In fact, coming into the Discovery forum right after reading threads in another forum which shall remain nameless is like finally facing your Waterloo.

I think that also had to do with copyrights and clearances. The old stuff isn't copyrighted any more. It's in the public domain.

I've got to be honest, I wish I had never seen the first two episodes. I'm pretty negative towards them and feel they added nothing to the story. Much like the David Mack novel. It just felt like mental masturbation.
I rewatched the first two episodes before watching the third, and I enjoyed them more the second time around. The Klingons talking still didn't work though, but the rest of it was better. Third episode is still better.

so i was rewatching the "This season" preview again and i noticed that in a scene the psycho female inmate michael was having a chat with said the 8000 people died in the FIRST TWO DAYS yet in the actual episode she just says that 8000 people died. i wonder why they cut that tidbit of dialogue from the final episode.

Five kids hunger game to see who gets in to be a cadet.

They have to do this because, out of the trillions of UFP citizens, a lot of useless fuckups file their application again and again, every year.

Actually!!!!!

Isn't the fist level of Admissions where Wesley got cut, in season one TNG, a ###k of a lot like AMERICAN IDOL?

If half a billion people are trying to get into the academy twice a year, it's not possible that each cluster of 5 kids auditioning for entrance are going to be anything but completely randomly selected, so theres no telling that anyone of them is "meant to be" when it could just as easily be 5 turds, who all suck.

Fuck.

They have a sorting hat.

It's an app, software, but that's effectively how they might get...

What happens if the ammount of cadets who show up for the entrance exam is not divisible by 5?

Does the remainder of 1 get in automatically?

Is the whole number of applicants divided by a different number of cadets than 5 to try and make even clusters of competitors?

Here's how Tilly got in...

She's the only kid who showed up, becuase every one else had the flu, there was a power cut, and some fucker declared war on the klingons.

Last woman standing because no other woman was ever standing near her.

(No conformation on that, but other than wearing a really a short dress, even shorter than normal in TOS, I do not know how this woman got into the academy with her defectivities on display. Hitler, Khan, and Colonel Green were all in a position to stamp out gingers, and failed.)

Although a smart applicant can game the system, doing on purpose what Tilly did by accident, by taking their exam in a bad area full of dummies, or an area with a low to zero turn out.

Shows do this all the time so that the promo has some pull with audiences, make them interested. I've seen this same tactic in many other shows whether they are American (like Suits etc.) or Indian shows.

And how Tilly presents herself could just be her personality. Her actual performance in tests and duties may be much better than she comes off. I think this is what the showrunners will eventually project, allowing for growth of course.

Growth is good.

I mean, remember how much Kim or Mayweather sprouted, evolved and grew over the years, from their starting characters?

I agree copyright was a concern, but they didn't play a Beatles song in Discovery either. It's just a reference. They were afraid to mention any pop culture as it was felt to be transient and would immediately take the viewer out of the future world.

A lot of fans didn't like Sabotage turning up in the JJ films for that reason.

Hey, since Lorca's family business was making fortune cookies, will we see him in the ship's galley sometime making them? Jeez, talk about a weird vision!

Yeah I dunno where they are goin with that one.
When things get tense between Lorca and Burnham, he's gonna start sending her fortune cookies with messages like

"WATCH YOUR BACK"

and

"BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO MUTINEERS"

and maybe

"CAN YOU START YOUR SHIFT EARLY TOMORROW? I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT IN SICKBAY."
