Liked this episode from the very start. And like most, liked it better than the first two. But, if this had been the pilot, we'd have needed flashbacks or (god forbid) a character telling us about how Burnham got herself into her predicament.

But we ended up with the exposition any way. From the prisoners telling us who she was, to Saru going over what she did and the death of Georgiou, to Lorca talking about her court martial and how she was right.

"Context is for Kings" doesn't need to change a bit and we still wouldn't need the first two episodes.

The Beatles reference was interesting. Considering that this is the 23rd century, only 200 years from now, I can see the band still having a profile. Keep in mind, the Beatles debut is over 50 years old even today.

It was always stupid that Trek characters knew nothing of culture after about 1930. I understand they didn't want to date the show with contemporary references, which was probably a good idea at the time. But it got a little silly when everyone on TNG listened only to classical music and read 19th century fiction.

Voyager creeped forward to the fifties with its references, but even Enterprise's movie night always seemed to be a black and white film. Always a Paramount film for some reason. ;)

The Beatles are even older than Star Trek, so it's a long overdue reference! Maybe Michael and Tilly will break out their Abba LPs next week?

It's a pretty ship but I still don't know why you need 2 saucer sections

Think of it in terms of defensive rings, each one can easily be blocked off from the other.

Dangerous experiments in the outer ring can be isolated by closing, blocking or detonating the ring connectors we can see in the picture.

Useful defense against being boarded as well.

Plus more windows makes the ship seem more alive.

I like this theory. Although it's worth pointing out that the Spore Drive™ experiments are actually conducted in the secondary delta hull.

Here you can see the saucer rings rotating when Lorca activates the Spore Drive™ for Burnham. It actually looks like both rings are rotating. Whatever the hell that means.

I don't think what we were told by the characters in the episode touched on the subtleties and nuance of the actual events on the Shenzou, much less an explanation of the depth of Burnham's guilt, shame, and the Dis crew's reaction to her. In order to convey all this, you'd need to "see" at least some of what actually happened. Flashbacks, I think, would have been required.

I've got to be honest, I wish I had never seen the first two episodes. I'm pretty negative towards them and feel they added nothing to the story. Much like the David Mack novel. It just felt like mental masturbation.

I greatly preferred the first two episodes over the third, so I'm really glad they exist. Captain Georgiou instantly became one of my favourite Star Trek captains. It may seem silly based on just two episodes, but on the other hand, people still can't shut up about Robau...

Will be cool if it is the case but that would indicate both ships were built specifically for that experiment, which is unlikely.

Perhaps the disc rotation serves multiple purposes that we don't know about yet.

Also if both discs are rotating then that means they are truly separate from the rest of the engineering hull which is even better and makes it easier to defend the bridge.

Don't forget the original design of the ship did not have the rings at all so it must be a recent addition to the ship/script.

Also what on earth would the spinning discs mean for the main weapons mounted on them.

Is it a new firing pattern for the phasers.

Can they both spin in the same direction or are they fixed to turn in opposing directions.

We shall have to see.

Gonzo you could have made those a single post.

Ah, then I think I know the one you are talking about. Here's a screengrab …

(Didn't notice before that the images on the wall seem to show ships from the Battle at the Binary Stars. I recognize the Shenzhou and the ship with four nacelles.)

I don't think that is a Denobulan, a lot of missing details.

Pretty sure that's why the phaser banks go all around the ring with six sets to cover the whole ring both ventral and dorsal. Also the rings only move during the use of the Spore Drive otherwise they are just locked in place during regular travel and warp. You can see some of this effect in the Ep4 preview when the Discovery pops out by that sun after using the drive to jump.

I agree. Best hero ship design since the Enterprise E in 1996. Light years ahead of most of the other modern series ships.

1. Refit Enterprise
2. Original Enterprise
3. Enterprise E
4. Discovery
5. Enterprise D
6. Defiant
7. Enterprise NX01
8. Voyager
What?! No Excelsior?!?! Lol
