I like this episode, it has kind of Stranger Things / Battlestar Galactica / Star Trek all mixed together feel to it. Some problems with continuity and technology, at this time period crew could not transport between decks, only out of ship, shuttle should not be able to go to warp, etc. But I just treat it as reboot so it's ok for me. But I liked design of consoles, with switches, kind of retro but nice. Idea of mushroom propulsion id crazy but I liked that one too, it's strange, it's new. Also liked nod to birth of Section 31. EDIT: Not actually a nod but I just tought plot kind of implies they could be going in that direction with the story.

I was just trying to figure that one out, too. Going to watch the episode again anyway, but I don't really remember that.
Yeah, no overt mention of S31 in this series so far that I can tell, although it is clearly implied in nearly every aspect of life on Discovery. Only DS9 and ENT talked about it openly, IIRC. I'm sure it's coming, though.
Discovery is the story of how Section 31 learns that branding themselves with black badges is an easy way of letting their super-duper secret club getting revealed to normals.

Black badges, the ship's registry having "31" in it, the overall vibe. I guess maybe Kurtzman's involvement, too?
I've been sorta #Team31 since the start, at least as far as I was willing to be #Team anything without context [is for kings]. (Argh, I'm not gonna be able to resist doing that anytime I see that word all week.)
But I agree there's a chance it's something else, too; I just... eh, I tend to think modern-day creators who fiddle with ongoing sagas will tap into what the fans are already familiar with for that element of "I know what this is!" that Marvel has made so hot. When it comes to the MCU, you've got the uber-fans who scream "get hype" at the end of every movie credits sequence and the casuals struggling to catch up with the uber-fans and asking "what does it all mean? Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi."
I see this being replicated in other franchises now as well. (For the record, I'm definitely in the latter camp with that stuff...)
