Optimism, likeable characters and better science. And more lights wouldn't hurt either.
I definitely didn't get the lack of optimism claim this week. There's a whole segment on the wonderful things they'll do with their mushroom drive once the war's over. The Discovery is a science ship pushing the boundaries of exploration, they're just getting a funding boost (with post scarcity money...) because there's a war on.

Just my two bits, of course, but I found plenty of science here, or at least the tantalizing expectation of more science, but more practical science. As for likeable characters, I like Michael. I love Tilly. She's adorkable in every way. As for the optimism, some of that can be found in Lorca's speech to Burnham about staying, and why she should. Will there be more? I certainly hope so, but for me I found enough for now. I do hope you find enough to enjoy the show.

Late to the party...

I'll say is.. that's more like it! I had to turn the subtitles on a few times to understand what Lorca was saying (watched on Netflix), but was nonetheless impressed with Issac's performance. Loved Cadet Tilly. Found Saru alot more tolerable this time round.

Watching Lorca linger in his menagerie, examining his collection, made me realise that he may be the most dangerous ‘mystery wrapped in human form’ onboard the Discovery...

I liked it. Looks like Discovery is a ship full of cranky weird people who hate each other, and they're probably all keeping secrets.

Lorca's gonna turn out to be nuts, and Michael's gonna have to mutiny.

Again.

The final scene is probably the crew trying to carefully talk her out of aiming her phaser rifle at the warp reactor to rid Starfleet of them.

And failing.

I was a bit freaked out by the Gorn skeleton and obvious animal/alien experimentation going on.

Janeway would not have approved. I think even Dr Phlox might be concerned with what is going on here.

Nope, so please don't assume like that.

Sorry, I was just trying to give you the benefit of the doubt as it seemed your impression of the episode and the characters were unjustifiably dark and negative. I was worried I wasn't correctly understanding your position. But as you have now made it clear, I understand.

I gave it a 7, but a solid one. I liked it more than the two prior episodes, but there is still something not clicking completely with me, and hopefully that will come in the next few episodes. Actually, having the little bit of humor (Landry saying to Tilly, "Did he just shush you?" was well-placed, and well-done) helped this time around, and the series needs that little balance so it isn't a completely dark drama.

I did like that Lorca's family business was making fortune cookies and he had a bowl of them! Just a great little non-sequitur!

It's growing on me, slowly.

I'm kinda glad it looked closer to the look of the TOS Gorn, than to the CGI one from Enterprise.

Like I said, differing opinions. I thought there was plenty of optimism on show. And as for likable characters, Tilly & Lorca I thought were excellent. And Michael was a huge improvement over the first two episodes. I'm really looking forward to next week now.

I like Burnham's "Shit, that worked" line also.

Magic mushrooms?

Judging by the votes so far, "we" seemed to have enjoyed this episode a bit more than the first two. Just an observation on the masses.

Wow. I know people are always going to have differing opinions, but if you didn't like this episode, then I don't know what you want from this series!

A series that tells good stories and actually matches what's already been established in the Star Trek Franchise.

There, now you know. :bolian:
