This episode will always be special to me... my wife and I watched it while she was in early labor... and as of 17.37 hours today, I became a dad for the third time, of a beautiful baby boy Jorne! Whenever I will rewatch this episode in the future, it will always be connected to my son. And I'm glad it was a really, really great episode!

Personally I'm kind of sick of the “That's not Star Trek!” complaints, when most Trekkies could never agree on what exactly Star Trek actually is. For me it's just another facet in the varied Star Trek tapestry. It brings new elements and retains some of the old staples. So what, it's somewhat darker and somewhat more serious. I don't see that as bad in and of itself.

Me too. But, it's the usual reaction to almost every new Trek series. It's not exactly the same as before! Of course, had they made the same series all along, it would've cancelled, dead, and gone along time ago. The ability to change with the times is what allows ST to survive. Change is hard for some older fans though. Personally, I'm glad they've modernized for the times. There are some traditional Trek elements along with some new additions.

It works for me! Looking forward to the rest of the season!

When they placed a bomb on a dead body T'Whothehellcares was vacuuming up into his ship.

Yeah, I don't see that as so bad. I guess it could be part of a conventions of war. The hopeful and straight arrow Georgiou came up with it, so I don't think you can conclusively say so.

So we have a captain who will have convenient deaths to essentially legally kidnap people, have them forced under threat to work on war crime level tech, to win a war purely to...win and kill an opponent with no moral scale, has his own personal gimp den with personal restraint jail cell.

Okay, this is the first time we're really getting to know one of these utterly insane Starfleet captains so up close. And it's even more disturbing than TOS.

Maybe you are joking, and i assume you mostly are. But I think that these characterizations and predictions are all off target, and in a very negative way. Some of the things Discovery may get into might be a little questionable, but I think this ship and crew will largely stick to the legal and ethical side of things. My guess is that while Lorca is darker than most captains we have seen, I think he will turn out to be a good captain, if a little flexible with his morals at times. But nothing worse than that. But i could be wrong. I just don't get the same "evil" vibe from him that many other viewers are apparently getting.

Quite an interesting episode. I am still curious for more, but this doesn't give me a Star Trek vibe just yet. The amount of gore was quite something. Also, visually, everything is very dark. I actually need to up the backlight on my tv to properly see it.

All in all, some good stuff. Curious where this will go.

I think the mangled bodies in this episode was less "gory" than chest and head-exploding Remmick from "Conspiracy." LOL

I'm sure it will be a special episode for both of you. Congratulations on the birth of Jorne!

Sorry to bother. What’s the registry number of the Glenn? Seeing both NCC-1030 and NCC-1040 on the interwebs.

1030

Not baby Saru?

Congratulations!

This one was a big improvement over the first two.
I really like the rest of the characters, sure they were asses to Burnham, but she is a mutineer who started a war with the Klingons, I think some hostility is understandable.
Stamets is a bit hostile, and obviously not happy to have his reseach taken over as part of the war, but I don't think any of that keeps him from having potential to be an interesting character. Definitely curious to see more of him once he's warmed up to Burnham, or once we start getting some scenes from his perspective.
I like Tilly a lot.
Lorca is definitely a darker character than what we usually get, but he still seems like an interesting character. I'm curious exactly what is going on with the creature from the Glenn.
Could somebody explain what the spores do? I missed Lorca's explanation at the end.

Am I the only one who thinks that gushfest called "After Trek" genuinely sucks?

I love the host, and the nerdist podcast, I really do. Especially doing a podcast myself, I can really appreciate it.

But the After Trek is just such an eyeroll.

He does seem like that at first but really listen to his grievances and imagine yourself in his situation. I know I'd have a chip on my soldier. Then imagine someone forces a mutineer on you. I'd be more than a little pissed! I think that is coming through loud and clear. There was some softening later in the episode. We'll have to see if that continues.

He comes across as a blatant stereotype of a bitchy, whining, queen. If I was a non militant homosexual and wasn't bothered about representation for the sake of it, I'd probably find him offensive.

On the other hand, one could take the view that Stamets, along with everyone else in STD, is so woefully underwritten as a character, that Rapp's just playing himself purely because he's not been given any character to play.

Only because it would've livened proceedings up a bit, I was rather hoping we'd see Rapp butt naked in the bath with his lover, shouting "Infamy, infmay, Lorca's got it in for me!"

I’m very interested to see what happens with him and he has the right to be angry considering his friend. However the reason I still thought he was a douchebag was he took it a step further by calling Lorca a warmonger. I mean maybe he is, but he is still the captain.

I've deliberately avoided it, I find those network sanctioned after action discussion shows tedious at best, it's too soon and too biased to do anything like a decent analysis.

Well, if that's your benchmark....
Considering that it is still a highly popular, well loved family show that was running in its first season, on a widely watched network in the late 1980s, that's not a bad benchmark, really.

Just watched it a second time. Still like it very much. Three things that came up, though:

Right before Burnham meets Saru and he escorts her to engineering we see her standing in front of a screen showing what looks like the blue jumpsuit she's wearing. The computer says something to the effect of “matter synthesis complete” which let's me think it's a replicator which just made her suit. If that's the case, why is she already wearing it when the computer says its line?

Also, didn't someone upthread wonder why the Discovery was conducting science experiments near the front lines of the war with the Klingons? Well, there's actually a line in the beginning of the episode where they say the ship is actually away from the front lines. Just wanted to point that out.

Another thing stood out as confusing to me: Wasn't it an odd choice to have two (!) blue glow-y stardust thingies in the same episode that are not related – the lifeform attacking the transport in the beginning and the subspace fungus? Or am I missing something?

Great news! Congratulations, @Roald!
