That was something I didn't realize until you mentioned it: Saru mentions the brig areas had a hull breach. You see the reaction from Georgiou, but after that there didn't seem any effort to see if Burnham was still alive (again, they were concentrating on not blowing up).
But that seems like something you could hand off to the transporter chief, who probably didn't have a lot going on right at that moment.
You have a point. Just a quick intercom message to scan for readings in the brig and beam out anyone alive.
There's also the question of why they had her jump off the hull and spend X minutes flying there if they could just transport her nearby given we know they could since they transported her back.
Indeed - in fact, it never occurred to me before, but the Red Alert/combat job of the transporter chief should really include using the transporter as a rescue method for hull beaches, loss of pressure, fires, etc.

It should be, but I would have to review TOS to see if transporters were ever used to lock on to something within the ship. Generally I think in TOS they were always externally focused.

So i just realized something. James Frain's portrayal of Sarek reminds me of Ben Cross's portrayal of Sarek from Star Trek '09.
It was mentioned in "Day of the Dove", as far as beaming from point to point within the ship, to send Kirk to Engineering. Spock said it wasn't advisable and very risky.
When trying to find logic in the functioning of the transporter -- it's clearly an extremely complicated device that succeeds or fails due to the interaction of many complex variables, which you must be extensively trained to understand -- why else is operating the transporter it's own full-time job, even 100 years after this episode?
I just had a moment of wondering if the cheesy alien names are a bad omen. The Crepusculans, who have a crepuscular feel. Kelp is eaten by gentle sea animals so we have our prey species, the Kelpiens. It's all just a bit too literal, right?

Rewatched episode two with my wife this evening. She really doesn't like the Klingons!
One thing I noticed on watching it again: it does seem weird how we don't see Georgiou again after she's stabbed by T'Kuvma. Burnham is beamed away right before she arrives by her side. And they make such a point about Saru not being able to transport without a life sign. I also found it strange that Michelle Yeoh still seems to be in Toronto with the rest of the cast (as seen in After Trek). Why would she still be there if her character dies in episode two?

We've excused a lot of bad writing over fifty years. If we like the show, we figure out a way to explain around it. If we dislike, we scream bloody murder about how the writing is terrible and killing Star Trek.

You don't have to wait until the audience gets to know the characters better before involving the characters in a battle. Part of the reason for a battle scene may be to help establish who the character is. The first two episodes of DSC are for the purpose of showing us who Burnham is and how she will become the person who we will see join the Discovery crew.
It reminds me of the introduction of Kendra Shaw in BSG. She was a brand new character who was involved in a battle almost immediately after we first see her. That battle is then presented as a reason for her being the way she was. We'll see the impact of the battle, Georgiou's death, the mutiny, her imprisonment, on Burnham in ensuing episodes.
Loved episode 2, especially Georgiou's command of the bridge during the battle and Burnham's escape. We see yet another example of Georgiou taking Burnham's advise with little hesitation. I thought it was logical that the captain didn't give in to her emotions and attempt to rescue Burnham during the battle or at least confirm her status. Gonna miss Phillipa.
