I'm in agreement with others here who mentioned that you have to watch the first and second episodes together to get the complete story. And while I understand why CBS put episode 2 on All Access -- a draw to get subscribers -- I also agree with others here who said that both episodes should've been aired on the network.

Nah, Encounter at Farpoint was actually dull. This one, while a little clunky in spots, was still entertaining.

None of the Star Trek TV show pilots were very good, including this one. But all the Trek shows did eventually have some good episodes. My problem here is that watching all those shows cost nothing, this one does. Discovery will have a shorter leash with me. Although that leash does get some extra slack because I want to run through the Frazier shows again, and that will take a while.

Here's the way I see it. Most people are willing to pay to see a ST movie. You pay some money and exchange you get to see a larger budget version of Star Trek. The same is true with this show. It's got a huge budget at $8.5 million an episode. You're paying an admission fee to see a production that would otherwise not be affordable to produce. It's the same concept.

The difference of course is that your'e used to seeing TV series for free but used to paying for movies. Hopefully people can make the mental transition.

Frasier is running four episodes a night on some basic cable outlet the name of which escapes me although I watch it all the time. Ah, the modern television marketplace!

Not that it affects me, but the ads are where AllAccess would lose me. A paid for streaming service with ads is just... off to me. In my head, paying for streaming is like paying your BBC licence fee - you're essentially paying upfront instead of sitting through ads.

I'm sure I can catch all the Frazier shows on regular TV, but now I have the ability to watch them all in order and with no commercials. As long as I'm waiting for Discovery to improve, I can enjoy Frazier.

I thought the Klingon makeup looked OK except with Voq it looked a little too vampire-ish/Reman-ish.

I realise it has been a while, but I can't think of any previous Trek show that had a 'knock it out of the park' first episode. Most are lacklustre at best, and suffer many of the same problems The Vulcan Hello does - expositional clunky dialogue, characters not quite set yet

At least the others did feature all the main cast characters rather than just a few.

My comparative ranking of the pilots.
"Where No Man Has Gone Before"
"Emissary"
"Beyond the Farthest Star"
The Vulcan Hello/"Broken Bow"/"Encounter at Farpoint"
"Caretaker"

We get the privilege of paying for that too. We just get to pay more! :)

Well hell, as long as we keep playing this game, I have to get in on it myself.

Beyond the Farthest Star - never have seen a single episode of TAS, and not even remotely interested
Where No Man Has Gone Before, and/or The Cage - both OK, average at best
Encounter at Farpoint - dreadful
Emissary - boring
Caretaker - Trek at it's worst
Broken Bow - horrible, and broken
The Vulcan Hello - less than average, but not horrible

Watched part 2 this morning after rewatching the first part. Won’t get into spoilery stuff here but it was much better watching all the way through. It really does feel like a prologue, which is an interesting choice for how they’ve decided to air the series.

At this point, I think I’d rate the pilots:

1. Where No Man Has Gone Before
2. Caretaker
3. The Vuclan Hello/Battle at the Binary Stars
4. Broken Bow
5. Emissary
6. The Cage
7. Beyond the Farthest Star
8. Encounter at Farpoint

I didn't think there was much technobabble, and when they seemed to be going down that road, Saru had a nice shutdown line. Georgiou's line which was basically 'reverse the polarity' and he responds 'there's no fucking signal, did I stutter' (paraphrased)

Yeah, how they handeled technobabble was really nice and refreshing! They didn't over-explain it. They just used it.

Although, while the part with the telescope was funny, it really makes no sense there aren't any outside cameras pointing at all angles from the ship. They should have been able to put that on the viewscreen.

I'd argue "Caretaker" was actually a great two-parter on it's own, and the second episode of "Encounter at Farpoint" a good stand-alone episode.

"Broken Bow" was extremely good at introducing us to the characters and world-building, but the plot sucked.

"Vulcan Hello"/"Battle at the binary stars" felt fresh, but also not like a very good introduction to the series, more like a "prequel" to itself.

This kind of "opinion" still baffles me, makes me frustrated, and makes me laugh. I think this just reveals pre-existing bias against the show and not an objective look at the graphics.

Why do you put opinion in quotation marks? Because my opinion is not the same as yours? I am interested in special effects and model work, and my judgement has nothing to with "pre-existing bias". I just don't like parts if the FX-Work because it looks so artificial and does not blend in seamlessly with the live action.
Whats your problem with that?

That's a good interpretation actually - this two parter is a prequel to the prequel. Sets up the world of the 'true pilot'. I agree with the argument that a prologue is better than a flashback, so perhaps it is just a matter of waiting for episode 1 (take two) next week.

The ratings are in:

Star Trek: Discovery (CBS) – P 1.6/6 8.19

Couldn't quite beat The Orville premiere in rating and share among adults 18/49, perhaps to be expected since CBS has not been pushing this hard on broadcast as the premiere of a new network series. It did pull almost a million more total viewers in the overnights.

Somewhere in the midst of all the interviews with the cast, writers, producers and all, they made mention of the show actually having two pilots. I remember that well, because they're doing exactly what my take was from that; intro to Burnham and then moving on to the Discovery. So next week, we get the second pilot.

Looking at Burnham switch the settings on her phaser from stun to kill... Did T'Kuvma kill Michael's surrogate mother figure, or lover?
